BETHESDA, Md., July 31, 2012 /PRNewswire/ ? Courtyard by Marriott is encouraging men and women across the U.S. to pack their bags and do something with their significant others that they rarely get a chance to do?take a couple?s leisure getaway.

(Logo:? http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120731/PH49415LOGO-b?)

The first ever Courtyard couple travel survey, conducted by ECHO research, revealed that 25 percent of couples never travel for leisure purposes, and on average, 50 percent only travel together once or twice per year. According to the survey of men and women, almost 70 percent say they don?t go away often enough as a couple, and 87 percent enjoy traveling with their spouse or significant other more than anyone else.

?We all have so many responsibilities in our lives that making time for ourselves and a significant other all too often becomes our last priority,? said Janis Milham, vice president and global brand manager for Courtyard. ?Making time for a weekend or overnight getaway to a fun destination can be rejuvenating, and there is no better time than now to find that perfect destination.?

To inspire couples to hit the road more often, Courtyard teamed up with engaged travel bloggers Johnny Jet and Natalie Bahadur to identify top U.S destinations that offer everything couples look for in a leisure destination.

The good news, according to the survey, is both men and women agree on what?s important when on vacation together. Top couples? priorities include visiting local attractions (56 percent), rejuvenating (39 percent), being romantic (37 percent), developing their relationship (35 percent), eating great new foods (33 percent), and relaxing at their hotel (28 percent).?

When asked what they wish their partner would surprise them with away from home, both men and women ranked a fancy dinner out as number one. Following a fancy dinner, men would like to be surprised with catching a pro sporting event or an adventure activity, and women would like to be surprised with a couple?s spa treatment or shopping?although both men and women recognize those activities may not be on top of their partner?s activity wish list.

Based on couples? travel preferences, Johnny Jet and Bahadur developed a list of 20 well-trodden and off-the-beaten-path locations destined to make for fun and relaxing getaways where couples can discover local treasures, try tasty food, relax, and rekindle their relationships.

?We were very thoughtful in selecting the cities on our list and encourage other couples to explore all they have to offer,? said Johnny Jet. ?They offer such a variety of escapes, you can experience something new?whether it?s food, nature, art, or an adventure together.?

Destinations that made the list include Albuquerque, N.M., Boise, Idaho, Cape Cod Hyannis, Mass., Chicago, Ill., Dallas, Texas, Denver, Colo., ?Erie, Pa., Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Key West, Fla., Las Vegas, Nev., Louisville, Ky., Los Angeles, Calif., New Orleans, La., New York City, N.Y.,? Norwalk, Conn., Oakland, Calif., Savannah, Ga., Seattle, Wash., Scottsdale, Ariz., and Washington, D.C. ?See below to find out what makes these destinations unique. ??

Johnny Jet and Bahadur also have compiled a list of travel tips for couples taking an overdue adventure together. Some of their tips for an unbeatable getaway with your significant other include:

  • Communicate? Before hitting the road, discuss goals, interests, and desires for the trip so both parties don?t have unrealistic expectations.
  • Laugh?Travel plans can go wrong or change at the drop of a hat. Be prepared for changes in your itinerary, and roll with the punches.
  • Relax?Take some time at the hotel to relax, just the two of you. It?s rare to have uninterrupted quiet time, so take advantage of it.
  • Forget?Forget about the past and don?t re-hash recurring arguments while away. Similarly, if an argument breaks out on the trip, leave it there, don?t bring it home.
  • Patience?Be patient with each other. The trip is about spending time together, not necessarily about sticking to a rigid schedule.

The Courtyard Travel Survey was completed online among a random sample of 1000 U.S. adult couples with 722 (couples traveling together) qualifying for the travel relating questions. Interviewing was conducted by Echo Research between June 5 and 8, 2012. The results have a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percentage points at the 95 percent level of confidence.

The recent ?Courtship by Courtyard? survey by Courtyard by Marriott revealed that couples traveling together for fun prioritize visiting local attractions, rejuvenating, and being romantic.? On behalf of the hotel, travel blogger Johnny Jet and fianc?e Natalie Bahadur, a lifestyle writer and avid traveler, identified 20 getaway destinations, ranging from urban hot spots to laid-back waterfront towns that offer everything important to those traveling as a twosome.

Albuquerque, NM

Enjoy all New Mexico has to offer by floating above it! In your romantic hot air balloon, fly over the famous Rio Grand river, visit shops in Santa Fe, and taste some of the best Mexican food north of the border at Sadie?s of New Mexico.??

Boise, ID

Idaho is known for more than just potatoes. Explore the forests, rivers, state parks, and even a few breathtaking caves! Hike, bike, or tube through the Idaho landscapes or spend a romantic evening at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival.

Cape Cod Hyannis, MA

A short drive from Boston and nestled on the famous coast of Massachusetts, Cape Cod has everything for a leisurely getaway. Take a walk on the beach or through the perfectly American summer town. Provincetown, at the tip of the cape, provides the perfect spot to catch a glimpse of a passing whale pod. Indulge by visiting or staying on the islands of Nantucket or Martha?s Vineyard.

Chicago, IL

Deep-dish pizzas, world-famous museums, and cutting-edge architecture are only a few things that the ?windy city? has to offer. Visit the historic Navy Pier or spend a day shopping on Michigan Avenue. Sports lovers will always have a game to attend, especially at the famous Wrigley Field.

Dallas, TX

As the saying goes, ?Everything is bigger in Texas,? and Dallas is no exception. Fort Worth is the booming hub of Texas commerce and only 30 miles west of Dallas. Together, these cities offer the best barbeque and Tex-Mex in the southwest. Put on your cowboy hat and boots and enjoy a night of line dancing and mechanical bull riding at the largest honky-tonk in the world, Billy Bob?s Texas Review.

Denver, CO

Denver is known for sitting at the foot of the majestic Rocky Mountains. At a mile above sea level, the breathtaking ?mile-high city? also offers great restaurants, entertainment, and art. Catch a live show at the beautiful Red Rocks Amphitheatre, which is carved in a geological formation and is renowned for its natural acoustics.

Erie, PA

National Geographic and countless others have claimed that Lake Erie is one of the best spots in the world to watch a sunset. Take a stroll through Presque Isle State Park, which has 11 beaches along Lake Erie, and enjoy activities such as swimming, boating, hiking, biking, rollerblading, and bird watching.

Kailua-Kona, HI

Hawaii always makes the list for top getaway destinations. The sun shines year-round, and it offers some of the best beaches in the world. In this seaside town, numerous historic sites illustrate the main island?s culture and tradition. Take a walk in the sand, explore the town, or simply relax on the beach. If you are looking for adventure, explore the beautiful rainforest or hike to the local volcano.

Key West, FL

Travel to the tip of the Florida coastline, only 90 miles from island of Cuba. Enjoy this tropical destination with its vibrant nightlife, bars, and live bands throughout the city. Take a relaxing dip in the warm Atlantic, visit the famous Hemingway House or Key West Lighthouse, or grab a drink at an outdoor Tiki bar and enjoy it on a white sand beach.

Las Vegas, NV

You never know what to expect in Sin City. Shop until you drop at the Forum Shops at Caesar?s Palace, which offers the most valuable retail real estate in the country. Take a walk down the strip and pop into a casino and risk your luck on a slot machine. Thrill seekers, take the leap off the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel and Tower; it?s a free-fall from 855 feet or the equivalent of 108 floors. If you are still unsure of what you want, ask any hotel concierge service (Remember in Vegas, you don?t need to be a guest for advice).

Los Angeles, CA

When arriving in Los Angeles, fuel up at In-N-Out Burger and head over to Sunset Boulevard to go shopping (or window shopping!) on Rodeo Drive. Make sure you get a glimpse of the Hollywood sign, and try to catch one of the celebrities on the TMZ tour. Pop over to Hollywood and find your favorite celebrity on the Walk of Fame, or visit Universal Studios, Hollywood. Enjoy one evening on the Santa Monica Pier and ride the Ferris wheel over the Pacific.

Louisville, KY

If you are heading to Louisville in the spring, don?t forget your hat! Wild and extra-large hats are donned for the Kentucky Derby, so if you are lucky enough to see the race, make sure you are prepared. Enjoy a classic mint julep and head over to the Louisville Slugger Museum, the famous maker of most wooden baseball bats. The epicenter of bars, restaurants, and nightlife is found on Fourth Street Live!

New Orleans, LA

Travel to the historic French Quarter, and with a drink in hand, make your way down the famous Bourbon Street. One will enjoy the tranquility and culture this city offers. Jazz musicians still flock to New Orleans to play anywhere they can, even on the street. Po?boys, jambalaya, and gumbo are the must-have foods in this Creole-influenced city.

New York City, NY

Explore the Big Apple?s soaring cityscapes, world-class entertainment, and national landmarks that make this city a destination any couple can enjoy. The amazing restaurants, famous theatres, and vibrant nightlife will keep you busy in the city that never sleeps. Visit the museum at ground zero, and if you register beforehand, admission is free.

Norwalk, CT

This port city is home to some of the trendiest shopping and dining in New England. Eat at the Rowayton Seafood Restaurant, right on the water, grab a pie at Rowayton Pizza, or a lobster roll from 101. Roll up your jeans and take a romantic walk along the shores of Long Island Sound. Rent kayaks at the Rowayton Market and head for the Five Mile River.

Oakland, CA

Oakland is central to the many wonders of Northern California. Take a day trip to San Francisco or Sonoma for some wine tasting. The city is in resurgence from the 80?s and 90?s and offers trendy shops and some of the best restaurants in the Bay Area. You may even catch one of the many festivals at Jack London Square.?

Savannah, GA

The scenery in Savannah is best enjoyed on a historic horse-drawn carriage. Take in the natural beauty of the Weeping Willow trees or experience true southern cooking at Paula Deen?s restaurant, The Lady and Sons. If you have a sweet tooth, stop by Savannah?s Candy Kitchen for some traditional southern treats sure to fill your craving for sweets.

Scottsdale, AZ

Scottsdale is known for its 325-plus days of sunshine. It is also home to world-class spas and golf resorts. Transport yourself to the Old West and visit some old-time saloons. Grab a hot dog and attend a professional spring training baseball game, known as the Cactus League.

Seattle, WA

Birthplace of Starbucks and home to the famous Pike?s Place Fish Market, Seattle isn?t just a city; it is a work of art. The most obvious feature of Seattle is the Space Needle, erected for the 1962 World?s Fair. Take a walk through downtown or the shores of Puget Sound and gaze on the city?s surrounding natural beauty. The tallest and most stunning peak in the Cascade Mountain range, Mount Rainer soars above the city to provide a breathtaking view.

Washington, D.C.

Couples will enjoy our nation?s capital because of its history. One of the best ways to enjoy this is on the jogging track around the National Mall. When finished, have a picnic on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and hopefully spot the cherry blossoms in full bloom. Washington, D.C. is home to the world-famous Smithsonian Museum: with more than 137 million items in its collection, it?s the world?s largest museum and research complex. It might take more than a day to see it all!

Travel Blogger Johnny Jet and Fianc?e Natalie Bahadur, Lifestyle Writer and Avid Traveler, Offer Tips for a Successful, Rejuvenating Couple?s Getaway

Before You Pack:

  • Once you decide on a place to go, look for local activities that appeal to both you and your spouse. ?Ask a couple you know who?s been there, or ask friends on Facebook and Twitter for recommendations.
  • If you?ll be visiting family and friends, make sure you schedule some alone time together.
  • Decide together if you would rather play your schedule by ear or each plan some activities.? And be sure to talk about a budget, and do your best to stick to it.
  • Agree if it?s ok to do things separately?you don?t necessarily have to spend every minute together. Reconnecting with your partner is also about reconnecting and rejuvenating yourself.
  • Try to leave work behind. If it?s realistic, consider leaving your laptops at home or only accessing them if it?s an emergency.
  • Get organized for smooth travel. Print confirmations and itineraries before you leave. Scan your passport and credit cards (front and back) and email them to yourself on a web-based email account; if these things are stolen, you?ll have copies available.

During the Trip:

  • Be flexible, as you?ll be in new surroundings. Have a sense of humor if travel plans go wrong, have a back-up plan if it rains, and most importantly, relax and enjoy the time together.

Home Sweet Home:

  • Create an online photo album of your trip together, so you can share your experience with friends and family. Be sure your spouse is happy with any pictures you plan to post online.
  • Now that you?re home, commit to taking time for each other as often as you can. Start thinking about and even planning future trips and getaways so you have something to look forward to together.

Cocaine production drops by 25 percent in Colombia

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Production of pure cocaine in Colombia declined by 25 percent in the last year, according to a U.S. government survey of drug production.

Drug czar Gil Kerlikowske, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, said Monday that potential cocaine production in the South American country has dropped by 72 percent since 2001. Colombia now ranks third, behind Peru and Bolivia, in production of pure cocaine, he said.

"Potential production of pure cocaine in Colombia is down to 195 metric tons from 700 metric tons in 2001, the lowest production potential level since 1994 and the first time since 1995 that Colombia is producing less cocaine than either Peru of Bolivia," Kerlikowske said in a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Kerlikowske' s office said the drop in Colombia cocaine production has coincided with a decline in U.S. cocaine overdose deaths, positive workplace drug tests, the purity of cocaine available for street purchase and domestic cocaine seizures.

"Let me add some context to these results. They didn't happen overnight, there was a sustained effort requiring nearly a decade of steady, strategic pressure across more than one administration in both the United States and Colombia.

Kerlikowske said the decline in production is largely the result of Plan Colombia, a $7.5 billion U.S.-backed effort launched in 1999 to help the Colombian government crack down on a left-wing insurgency and drug organizations.

"The results are historic and have tremendous implications, not just for the United States and the Western Hemisphere, really globally," Kerlikowske said.

Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos said the decline is part of his country's overall strategy of cutting off funding sources for drug traffickers. Speaking in the town of Rio Negro, north of Bogota, Colombia, he said it was good news that Colombia is now third in cocaine production.

Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon said the government is also making strides in seizing cocaine, pointing to the confiscation of about 300 tons of the drug in the last two years.

U.S. Ambassador Michael McKinley told El Tiempo newspaper that "the numbers demonstrate historic advances in ending the fight against drugs in Colombia."

Speaking Monday, Kerlikowske said while the decline in Colombian production is a positive development, it is not a sign that powerful and deadly drug cartels are going out of business. Instead, he said, these groups, including those waging a drug war against each other and the government in Mexico, will "turn to anything illegal that makes money."

Know Your Miranda Rights | Saint Augustine Criminal Attorney

This article brought to you by Canan Law, the most respected team of St. Augustine attorneys specializing in criminal law.

?You have the right to remain silent.? The phrase is commonly known, but the Miranda rights, also called the Miranda warning, are probably the most important legal requirements of law enforcement when it comes to protecting the Constitutional Rights of citizens.

In 1966 the U.S. Supreme Court issued the landmark decision in Miranda v. Arizona that a person under arrest must be notified that he or she is not obliged to answer questions from law enforcement which may lead to self-incrimination. Under the 5th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, citizens are not obliged to make self-incriminating statements.

Accompanying the notification that a person has the right to remain silent while under arrest, the person must also be told that anything said may be used against him or her, he or she has the right to an attorney, and that in the event he or she cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided.

A person can be arrested without hearing the Miranda rights. Police only need probable cause to make an arrest, but the Miranda warning allows them to interrogate a detainee.

Law enforcement officers may ask for simple information such as name and address, before reading the Miranda warning to a person in custody. Any further probing will be inadmissible in court unless the suspect has heard and waived his or her Miranda rights.

Florida is one of a handful of states which have gone a step further in ensuring protection of a person?s 5th Amendment right by requiring law enforcement personnel to follow the Miranda warning with two questions: ?Do you understand each of these rights as they were explained to you?? and, ?Having these rights in mind, do you wish to speak with us now??

Once the Miranda rights have been given to a person in police custody, the police may ask questions pertinent to the case without the suspect?s legal counsel present. However, the arrested person is under no obligation to answer these questions.

Even if a person chooses to waive his or her Miranda rights initially, they can be re-invoked at any time during the interview, putting an end to further questioning.

Emotions like fear and anxiety tend to be overwhelming during an arrest. Many people reactively attempt to give police an explanation right away, but the best thing to do is speak with your attorney before speaking with law enforcement about your case. Invoke your 5th Amendment right by declining to answer questions after the Miranda rights have been given, and request an opportunity to speak with your lawyer.

Your attorney works for you, and the team at Canan Law is always ready to put your precious rights first, ensuring that you receive the due process guaranteed to every citizen by the U.S. Constitution.

Future of CIO profession to be discussed at Sept. 14 event in Berkeley, Calif.

University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business -- A just completed multi-year research project by the Fisher CIO Leadership Program at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business has uncovered the most important, role specific career success factors of chief information officers.

The study was initiated by Max Hopper, the iconic author of American Airlines industry-changing SABRE system and conducted by the Fisher CIO Leadership Program. Hopper was concerned that so many companies were failing to achieve much if any benefit from their expensive IT organizations, often after spending large amounts of money with little to show for it. He formed a committee to identify the world's more successful CIOs those few who had a major, enduring positive impact both on their companies as well as their industries.

A Fisher Program team interviewed in depth each of the fourteen prominent CIOs identified by the Hopper Committee. The companies represented included American Airlines, WalMart, Charles Schwab, FedEX, Marriott, Levi Strauss, FritoLay, Cisco and several others.

An event discussing the findings of this ground-breaking study will take place at UC-Berkeley's Haas School of Business on September 14th and will be attended by most of the CIOs who were interviewed as well as by CIOs and individuals in related professions.

New dimension of physics research: Cutting the graphene cake

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Researchers at The University of Manchester have demonstrated that graphene can be used as a building block to create new 3D crystal structures which are not confined by what nature can produce.

Sandwiching individual graphene sheets between insulating layers in order to produce electrical devices with unique new properties, the method could open up a new dimension of physics research.

Writing in Nature Materials, the scientists show that a new side-view imaging technique can be used to visualize the individual atomic layers of graphene within the devices they have built. They found that the structures were almost perfect even when more than 10 different layers were used to build the stack.

This surprising result indicates that the latest techniques of isolating graphene could be a huge leap forward for engineering at the atomic level.

This development gives more weight to graphene's suitability as a major component in the next generation of computer chips.

The researchers' side-view imaging approach works by first extracting a thin slice from the centre of the device. This is similar to cutting through a rock to reveal the geological layers or slicing into a chocolate gateaux to reveal the individual layers of icing.

The scientists used a beam of ions to cut into the surface of the graphene and dig a trench on either side of the section they wanted to isolate. They then removed a thin slice of the device.

Wonder material graphene is a two dimensional material consisting of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb or chicken wire structure. It is the thinnest material in the world and yet is also one of the strongest. It conducts electricity as efficiently as copper and outperforms all other materials as a conductor of heat.

Demonstrating its remarkable properties won Professor Andre Geim and Professor Kostya Novoselov the Nobel prize for Physics in 2010. The University of Manchester is building a state-of-the-art National Graphene Institute to continue to lead the way in graphene research.

Dr Sarah Haigh, from The University of Manchester's School of Materials, said: "The difference is that our slices are only around 100 atoms thick and this allows us to visualize the individual atomic layers of graphene in projection.

"We have found that the observed roughness of the graphene is correlated with their conductivity. Of course we have to make all our electrical measurements before cutting into the device. We were also able to observe that the layers were perfectly clean and that any debris left over from production segregated into isolated pockets and so did not affect device performance.

"We plan to use this new side view imaging approach to improve the performance of our graphene devices."

India's Olympic team abuzz about mystery woman

(AP) ? A mysterious woman in red has caused an international incident at the London Olympics.

Indian officials are mystified ? and miffed ? after an unknown young woman managed to march with the country's athletes and officials during the opening ceremony Friday night.

Games organizers on Sunday downplayed security concerns around the unscripted moment, saying the interloper was a ceremony cast member and had been screened before entering the Olympic Park.

Images from Friday's ceremony showed a young woman in turquoise jeans and a red jacket marching alongside Indian flag bearer Sushil Kumar at the head of the delegation of 40 athletes in bright yellow and navy blue.

"We are totally dazed," Indian press atttache Harpal Singh Bedi said. "How can a person without any accreditation walk past?"

Indian officials said they had no idea who the woman was. Indian media identified her as Madhura Nagendra, a graduate student from the southern city of Bangalore who had been living in London.

Her father, K. Nagendra, was quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency as saying that his daughter had been chosen to dance in director Danny Boyle's ceremony, and speculated that she might have been asked by organizers to escort India's team into the stadium.

"This might have hurt our team's feelings. I feel very sorry for that," he was quoted as saying.

The mystery woman case dominated Indian media's coverage of the opening of the games.

"Who's That Girl?" asked the front page of The Hindustan Times.

"Leaky London: Unaccounted presence in march past," said a headline in the Times of India. The newspaper said the mystery woman had "brazenly gatecrashed the party, raising security concerns and adding to the anger over India's blink-and-miss appearance on global TV screens."

Bedi said India's acting chef de mission, P.K.M. Raja, had sent games organizers an official letter of complaint.

"I think this is definitely a security lapse," Bedi said.

But London organizing chief Sebastian Coe insisted the woman had not posed a threat to the ceremony. He told reporters she was "a cast member who clearly got slightly over-excited."

Some 10,000 volunteers performed alongside professional musicians, actors and dancers in Boyle's spectacular ceremony.

Coe stressed the woman had been screened to get into Olympic Stadium so there had been no security breach.

"Don't run away with the idea that she walked in off the street," Coe said, adding that games officials "will have our own discussions" about the incident.

There was perhaps a touch of Indian satisfaction in Britain's perceived lapse, which comes as India is suffering its own Olympic embarrassment. An Indian court has barred Indian Olympic Association chief Suresh Kalmadi from attending the London opening ceremony, citing the "national interest."

Kalmadi is out on bail after spending nine months in jail awaiting trial on corruption charges related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

India also was stung by British media criticism of the chaotic preparations for those 2010 games in New Delhi, which were marred by construction delays and a budget that ballooned from $412 million to $15 billion.

Bedi said the opening ceremony intrusion did not reflect poorly on India.

"We are too big a country to be embarrassed by it," he said. "It should be an embarrassment for the hosts, not for India."

Spain's economy contracts third quarter in a row

MADRID (AP) ? The Spanish economy remains stuck in its second recession in three years after contracting 0.4 percent in the second quarter of 2012 from the previous three months, according to official data.

It was the third consecutive contraction following the previous two 0.3 percent quarterly declines, Spain's National Statistics Institute said Monday.

The institute said that compared to the second quarter in 2011, the economy had contracted 1 percent. A technical recession is commonly defined as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction. The slump was due to a fall in demand at home, offset slightly by an increase in exports, the institute added.

The conservative government predicts the economy will contract 1.5 percent for all of this year and 0.5 percent next year.

Spain has near 25 percent unemployment and is struggling to avoid having to seek a financial bailout, as Greece, Ireland and Portugal have already done.

Spain has asked for as much as ?100 billion ($123 billion) in loans for its banks, which are laden with soured investments following a property sector collapse in 2008. A sovereign bailout for Spain, which has a ?1.1 trillion economy, would be far larger.

The country has been under intense financial market pressure in recent months with the interest rate for its benchmark 10-year bonds on the secondary market surpassing the 7 percent barrier. Such a rate is considers unsustainable over the long term and taken as an indicator that the country may not be able to manage its finances without outside help.

The pressure has eased in recent days after European monetary leaders indicated they would work to help Spain.

On Monday, the 10-year yield edged down by 0.16 percentage points to 6.57 percent.

The country's Treasury tests investor sentiment Thursday when it auctions bonds maturing in 2014, 2016 and 2022.

Thursday also sees Italian Premier Mario Monti in Madrid for talks with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on the financial crisis battering both countries. Italy has also seen its borrowing costs rise considerably in recent months.

Practical Business Planning For The Solo Practitioner

Lately I have been doing as much business consulting as actual law practice. I find that this is due, in large part, to the type of clients that hire me. While I work with a number of traditional Mom & Pop business owners, I also work with a LOT of technologically savvy young entrepreneurs. They come to me because, as a former systems engineer, I speak Geek. However, they stay with me because, like most solos, I speak English more fluently than I speak either Legalese or Businessian.

But there is a lot more than that that we solo and small firm lawyers have in common with my clients than just that. We tend to be more tech-savvy than our Big Law counterparts. We also tend to think outside the box more often. Any small business person has to be the technical master of our product: in our case, the law; in my clients' case, everything from making good food in their restaurants to designing the perfect iPad case. And when we aren't becoming proficient at our craft, we have to become proficient at running a business and marketing our goods and/or services.

In short, you as a solo or small firm lawyer have a LOT in common with my small business owner clients. Therefore, I will give you some of the same advice I give my clients:?You need a business plan.

Just like you wouldn't start driving your car across country without a map telling you how to get where you are going, you shouldn't run your business by the seat of your pants just hoping you will arrive at your intended destination. Most advice books tell you how to write a business plan that will appeal to investors. Here is how you write a business plan for you.

Start by writing a Vision Statement. This is NOT a mission statement. It is NOT an executive summary. It is a few paragraphs, tops, on what you think your ideal practice looks like. How big do you want it to be? Do you have employees? Partners? Associates? What kind of work are you doing, ideally? What does an ideal day look like? Who are your ideal clients? Write it all out. Make it as pie-in-the-sky as you want it to be, but make sure it is really YOUR ideal vision of your law firm.

Next, do your SWOT Analysis. Since we have already discussed doing one of those, I won't belabor the point. Once you have written down your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, write out a couple of paragraphs saying what you will do to leverage your strengths and opportunities and what you will do to address your weaknesses and threats. Note that some of your strengths will address some of those weaknesses, and some of your opportunities will balance out the threats. Don't be surprised if you are writing sentences like, "I will leverage my ability to write about the law to build content into my website and improve my search engine optimization, which will offset my inability to pay service providers for SEO optimization services." That's because out of your SWOT Analysis will come your marketing plan. That's right ? your marketing plan. How you take advantage of strengths and opportunities and how you address threats and weaknesses is through MARKETING.

Also notice that you have a pretty neat little summary of what the market for your services looks like: who your clients are, what kind of business they bring to you. Add in a little research about the market for legal services in your geographic area. Ask yourself what you are going to do to tap into that market, write down the answer, and voila! Your Market Summary is written. (Hint: A call to?your local library or Chamber of Commerce can help you find out the number of prospective clients for your services in your area.)

Next, we will work on setting monetary goals for your business:

  • First, look at your current costs of doing business. Come up with a monthly total, a budget, that it costs to keep your business alive. That budget is your "Survive" number. At that level your firm will survive.
  • Now, think about how much more than that budget you need to make in order to regularly take home a small salary. Enough of a salary that you are paying your bills at home, too. That number, realistically, is your "Provide" number. At this level, your firm will survive and so will you.
  • Now I want you to imagine what it would look like to "Thrive:" How many people would need to work for you? How much would your costs increase? How much more would you be taking home? This should be a number where you are comfortably providing for you and your staff every month, paying all the bills and socking away a little into a rainy day fund both at work and at home.
  • Finally, ask yourself what it would take to really "Prosper." How many days a week are you working? Who is working for you? How much does that increase your costs? This is pie-in-the-sky time ? what would it take, financially, for you to have that ideal law firm you envisioned in your Vision Statement?

Now that you have your Survive, Provide, Thrive, and Prosper numbers worked out, put them into a spreadsheet showing monthly cost and monthly income for one year each. Year 1 is Survive. Year 2 is Provide. Year 3 is Thrive. And year 5 is Prosper.

What you now have is a business plan of sorts. No, not the kind you can take to the bank or get venture capital. (Although with a little tweaking, some of my clients have turned this into a more formal business plan that can get an SBA loan.) But you have a big picture overview of your business: what you want it to be, how you plan to grow your business, how you plan to market your business, and financial projections for years 1-5.

I highly recommend revisiting your business plan on a regular basis. Remember: the map is not the territory! As market conditions or costs change, so should your business plan. As your goals change, so should your plan. Just remember ? it's YOUR plan! What looked like prosperity today may look like mere survival tomorrow, so never be afraid to update your business plan.

Have you created a business plan?? What have you done the same?? What have you done differently?

Tunisia: Hardline Islam threatens democracy gains

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? Thousands of hardcore Muslims chant against Jews. Youths rampage through cities at night in protest of "blasphemous" art. A sit-in by religious students degenerates into fist fights and the desecration of Tunisia's flag.

In the birthplace of the Arab Spring, the transition from dictatorship to democracy has been mostly smoother than in neighboring countries, with no power-hungry military or armed militias to stifle the process. But as a moderate Islamist party rules with the help of secular forces, an unexpected threat has emerged: the increasing boldness of ultraconservative Muslims known loosely as Salafis, who want to turn this North African country of 10 million into a strict Islamic state.

Tunisia's hardcore Salafis are estimated to number only in the tens of thousands. But their organized and frequent protests against perceived insults to Islam, especially by artists, have rocked the country and succeeded in mobilizing disaffected and angry youth much more effectively than secular opposition parties.

Experts warn that an economic downturn could turn these spasms of religious-tinged rage into the new language of the opposition. Tunisia's economy shrank by 2 percent last year and unemployment stands at 18 percent ? even higher among young people.

"There's no question that unemployment aggravates the situation," said William Lawrence, the North Africa representative for the International Crisis Group think tank. "They go to Salafism because they have nowhere better to go socially, politically and spiritually."

As Salafis thrive in the new atmosphere of freedom of expression, they are aggressively attacking the free expression of those they see as insulting Islam. Their main target: artists who themselves have used democratic upheaval to raise sharp, often provocative, questions about the relationship between religion and society.

Tensions that were bottled during the regime of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali are bubbling to the surface.

A film called "Neither Allah nor Master" about secularism by an atheist director, an animated film portraying God as an old man that was broadcast on TV, and most recently an art exhibit dabbling in religious themes have all provoked the wrath of the Salafis.

The Spring of the Arts exhibit in the wealthy Tunis suburb of La Marsa triggered June riots that left one dead and 100 injured. Many of the paintings questioned religion's role in society, including some clearly skewering Salafis. There were images of veiled women hanging from punching bags in a boxing ring, veiled women buried in stones, and paintings of demonic bearded faces.

The Islamist-led government has tread carefully around Salafi demonstrations, conscious that they themselves were once victims of government oppression and fearful of further radicalizing the Salafis.

That has exposed the government to accusations by the liberal and leftist opposition that they are unable to preserve stability, or even worse ? complicity in the extremist violence.

For Tunisian authorities, grappling with the Salafis is made all the harder by the fact that they have not coalesced into an articulate, united movement but are rather comprised of different groups, some which may even be under manipulation of secular remnants of the old regime. That contrasts with Egypt, where Salafis have formed political parties and participate in politics.

Salafis did not pop out of nowhere in Tunisia after the revolution. The movement grew quietly under Ben Ali, who vigorously repressed the moderate Islamists of the now dominant Ennahda Party, heirs to Tunisia's own indigenous tradition of reformist Islam.

Under Ben Ali, imams were appointed by the state and religious schools closed. Many of those alienated by the official secular culture of the French-speaking elite turned to the strict Salafi Islam of the Arabian peninsula.

"They were influenced by the Salafi discourse coming out of the Gulf countries and diffused by the Salafi satellite channels all through the 1990s," explained Slaheddine Jourchi, a Tunisian writer and human rights activist who has closely studied Islamist movements. "They saw the Salafi discourse as the most pure in Islam."

With the fall of the dictatorship, Salafis are now free to spread their message to the rest of the country.

One of the biggest flashpoints was Manouba University near the capital where conservative students and their allies staged a months-long sit-in protesting restrictions on the Islamic veil and lack of prayer halls on campus. They fought with secular students and in one case tore down the national flag and replaced it with a black one bearing the Islamic profession of faith.

"Our movement benefits from the new climate of freedom to get out its message and preach to people," said Bilal Chaouachi, a bearded theology student who describes himself as a follower of Salafi Islam and gives religion classes in his local mosque.

Redha Belhaj, head of the recently legalized Hizb al-Tahrir, or Liberation Party, which calls for the restoration of the Islamic Caliphate, said that Ennahda betrayed the country when it declined to enshrine Islamic law as the basis of all legislation in the new constitution.

Speaking from his modest offices at the edge of Tunis' medina, Belhaj claimed that Tunisians long for an Islamic state.

"People want Islam as a solution, they want Shariah as a system and a regime," he said. "Ennahda deceived public opinion."

Belhaj does distance himself from the riots, such those in June, emphasizing that his party rejects violence of any kind. "They are all young and without education and lack understanding," he said of the rioters, hinting that these youths were being manipulated into violence to make Islamists look bad.

For Tunisia's secular-minded elite, the Salafis represent everything they fear with the fall of the dictatorship and the rise of Islamist politics.

A rally in May by the group Ansar al-Shariah, or the followers of Islamic law, led by a veteran of the fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan, alarmed many Tunisians. Some 4,000 Salafis gathered outside the revered main mosque in the city of Kairouan to voice calls for an Islamic state, chanting about conquering the Jews and cheering speeches calling for an Islamic state.

Especially popular were four masked men performing martial arts moves known as Zamaqtel, a kind of Islamic kung fu. The discipline's founder, Mohammed Moncef Ouerghi, developed the martial art during 16 years in Ben Ali's prisons. While happy to be out of prison and enjoying the new freedoms, he was dismissive of Tunisia's embrace of democracy: "Democracy was conceived of by humans, not Muslims, before the time of the Prophet Muhammad ? if democracy is important, why is it not in the Quran?"

In many cases, people joining Salafi demonstrations may have been motivated less by piety than by a chance to loot or express dissatisfaction over a lack of jobs for young people. Some of the June rioters broke into shops and attacked courthouses and police stations.

The Interior Ministry has also alleged that some of the rioters were being paid by wealthy businessmen loyal to the old regime.

The La Marsa art exhibit violence appears to have been provoked by a former member of Ben Ali's political party who had a grudge against the gallery unrelated to the exhibit. He snapped pictures of some of the more provocative paintings and showed them at a nearby mosque. He also uploaded them onto a Facebook page ? along with some paintings that weren't even in the exhibit ? with captions condemning them as blasphemous.

Sami Brahim, an expert on Islamist movements in Tunisia who runs a cultural center right near the art gallery in La Marsa, expects the whole Salafi movement to subside with time because it is a cultural import funded by the Gulf states.

Since the movement was nurtured under the oppression of Ben Ali, he said, it should eventually wither in the face of greater freedom of expression and debate.

"Salafism doesn't yet have the courage to take part in politics since from the beginning it hasn't been an organized movement and it doesn't have a very well elaborated discourse," said Brahim. "It would just need a healthy atmosphere, real freedoms and a relatively successful economy for the Tunisian Salafi movement to be marginalized."

Google Maps Offers High-Resolution Images, Including London's Olympic Games

Google is continuing to expand its collections of high-resolution images of selected cities and sights around the world, including the latest batch of images that includes highlights of Olympic venues in London, where the 2012 Summer Games are playing out now.

"This week we published new high resolution aerial and satellite imagery for 25 cities and 72 countries/regions," wrote Bernd Steinert, a geo data specialist, on the Google Lat Long blog on July 27. "Our updates are now available in both Google Earth and Maps."

The updates include aerial images, satellite images and a wider collection of 45-degree images which are taken at an angle and allow details and perspectives of buildings and other features to appear more clearly in the photographs.

In the latest images of the United Kingdom, the Google Maps update includes photos taken from high above this past May of the Olympic Park and Village being used at for the London 2012 Olympic Games, Steinert described in his post.? In some images, the final construction touches can be seen as they were being added to the open-air Olympic Stadium, he wrote.

Other new content includes fresh aerial images of the spectacular Bryce Canyon in Utah, as well as new ?high resolution aerial imagery of sites in Antelope Wells, N.M.; Green Bay, Wis.; Huron, S.D.; Hutchinson, Kansas; Olympia, Wash.; Park Hills, Mo.; Peach Springs, Ariz.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Placerville, Calif.; Riverside, Calif.; Rosenfeld, Texas; and Waverly, Ohio.

An assortment of cities in Austria, Spain and Switzerland also were highlighted with collections of new high resolution aerial imagery.

A noteworthy feature of the new photo collections are the latest 45-degree imagery that includes gorgeous images of spectacular locations in 28 cities around the world, including beloved tourist spots, according to Google. The 45-degree imagery update includes coverage for 21 U.S. cities and 7 international locations, including Chicago, Ill., where the Trump International Hotel and Tower, the second-tallest building in the United States and a prominent Chicago landmark, is portrayed; and Munich, Germany, where the Frauenkirche, a symbol of the Bavarian capital city, is displayed.

Other cities getting new high resolution 45-degree images include Anderson, Calif.; Beech Island - New Ellenton, Ga.; Cape Girardeau, Mo.; Carthage, Mo.;? Columbus - Reynoldsburg, Ohio; Dayton, Ohio; Everett, Wash.; Galena, Kansas; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Joplin, Mo.; Lafayette, La.; Lancaster, Calif.; Louisville, Ky.; Lowell, Mass. - Nashua, N.H.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Pueblo,, Colo.; Redding, Calif.; Springfield, Ill.; and Yuba City, Calif.

Other countries and regions getting new high resolution satellite updates include Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Canada, Cape Verde, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, France, Greece, Greenland, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Jamaica, Latvia, Lesotho, Libya, Lithuania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Nepal, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay, Venezuela, Western Sahara, Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe, according to Google.

In June, Google unveiled several upcoming features in its Google Maps offerings for road warriors. They included 3D Google Earth, an app that shows bird?s-eye views of cities, countryside and many other locations, and an offline version of Google Maps, which allows people to download mapping information for a city they are visiting before leaving for a trip. The information can be saved to their laptop or tablet, and then opened when they get to their destination so they can find their way around even without an Internet connection.

Google Maps images have become well-known for their versatility and importance especially at times of disasters, such as during the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in March 2011. The Google images taken at that time provided amazing real-time looks at the devastation, as well as provided images taken before the destruction occurred.

grace in the midst of motherhood and ministry: is every family called ...

grace in the midst of motherhood and ministry: is every family called to adopt?

is every family called to adopt?

?Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:? to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.? Today I wanted to write a post about staying at home.? You know, the euphemism kind of ?staying at home,? which simply means that you?ve got kids and you don?t send them to daycare.? I sure wish we could come up with a different euphemism, seeing as how I ?stay at home? but am hardly ever, no never, at home.? Oh well. I wanted to write a blog post about GRACE.? Grace for moms who stay at home, but more pointedly, grace for moms who don?t.? I?ve been super convicted lately that way too many mommas who ?work outside of the home? (another insufficient euphemism) feel awfully judged and guilty and jealous and straight-up condemned, inadvertently or not by those of us who haven?t held a job since giving birth.? And vice versa, believe it or not.? Vice versa, indeed. Grace for moms who don?t stay at home.? And grace for moms who do. But this isn?t a post about staying at home or not staying at home.? It is, however, most definitely a post about GRACE. You see, a long time ago when I asked the Lord if He wanted me to stay at home with our imaginary kids (they?re real now; then they weren?t), He said, YES.? I heard Him plain as day, and so did Dan. But lately, I?ve asked Him another question that reminds me so so much of that one.? I guess that?s why I have been ever-so-surprised to hear Him answer, this time, NO. The question?? If He wants us to adopt. What I?m about to say, I find it painfully hard to type out, much less publish for others to read.? You see, for a while, I was convinced that EVERY Christian family MUST adopt.? I can quote you the statistics.? Suffice it to say, that would SOLVE the orphan epidemic, at least numerically. So what does one do when they believe that every Christian family should adopt, but they haven?t adopted?? And they pray like crazy about it, but they start to sense that, for one reason or another, their family isn?t going to?? At least not today? I don?t know what one does.? But my guess is they either change what they believe, or live in condemnation. So here goes nothin:? ?God does not call every Christian family to adopt.?? There.? I said it.?? And get this:? The second line to that statement is not, ?Only the obedient and cool ones.? If you or I are searching for whether or not God is leading us to adopt, (or to stay at home, or anything else, for that matter), one very simple litmus test can go a long way in helping us sort that out:? Is the feeling motivating you to do it, condemnation?? In other words, do you feel guilty or shameful or bad about yourself when you consider the other alternative (not adopting, not staying-at-home)?? ?? no one who takes refuge in Him will be condemned.? ?Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus?? God simply does NOT condemn.? If it is condemnation you are feeling, it is not from Him.? If you are trying to sort out if the desire to adopt is from Him, if it reeks of condemnation, it has an altogether different source.? Let?s clear up one thing for sure:? Holy Spirit conviction does not resemble Satanic condemnation.? And allow me to say one thing more:? Neither does Holy Spirit conviction resemble human pressure. No, Satan most certainly does not want an orphan to be rescued? But it might be worth it to him if he could make me forfeit my freedom in Christ to the enslavement of condemnation, AND make me push past the leadership of the Holy Spirit working in my spouse to the destruction of our relationship.? (The very relationship that shows the world ? earth and heavenlies included ? a picture of the mysterious unfailing love Jesus Christ has for His Bride, the church.) I am not ready to say that the Reeves family will never adopt.? My heart yearns to almost every day.? We can meet for coffee and I?ll tell you all the reasons why.? But I will also tell you all the reasons why I believe wholeheartedly He has spoken over me, No.? Or at least, Not today. Here in this place of the No.? And I will not spend my time here waddling in the mud of condemnation and guilt and shame. For heavens sake, the place of the No is an open field! There are so many places to go All sprouting forth from the free soil in the hands of our Loving Father who adopted us as dearly loved daughters and sons for life by His own blood. There is just no telling what He might do.? For orphans.? Though us.? Whom He has told, No. If you sense He is telling you to adopt, and it is in unity with your spouse (if you have one), by all means do not hesitate!? GO!? You can do it!? Put a little Holy Spirit power to it!? (Read: That was a joke. I was a cheerleader and enjoy self-deprecating humor.) But all joking aside, for those of us who do not sense Him telling us to adopt (at least not today), let?s embrace the open field of the No.? Explore ALL the possibilities of ways to live out James 1:27.? Start by picking up some pom-poms and cheering our hearts out for those who are adopting!? NOT avoiding them when we see them at Target because they make us feel guilty.? Ouch. If you don?t know what to do, I invite you to get to know my friends at Families Outreach, or other non-profit orphan care ministries like them.? Let?s not confuse God?s direction not to adopt, with Him saying not to do anything.? Not sensing God?s leadership to adopt (at least not today) has left me feeling condemned and shameful at worst, helpless and useless at best.? But I can?t get out of my head something that Chris Caine said at Passion this past year:? In regards to human trafficking, a cause for which Chris has given over her entire life, she charged all of us listening with more passion than I?ve ever heard her speak (and that is saying A LOT), to do one thing:? PRAY.? Whether you sit reading this with seven adopted sons and daughters playing at your feet, Or you sit alone today wishing a spouse would share your heart?s desire, Or you sit at peace with your place in the open field of the No, Or you sit in a puddle of tears over the pain of infertility, Or you sit confused and broken over financial limitations, You don?t have to pray that God would call you to adopt.? He will take care of that if He so chooses. Chances are, if you?re so inclined to it that you?re asking Him to call you to do it, He already has. But I?ve decided to use the next 40 days of my life to pray for orphans.? My amazing friend whom I?ve never met, Kay Warren, has put together a 40 Day Prayer Guide for Orphan Care.? Starting today, July 26, would you pray with me for 40 little days?? You can download the guide here, but I ask one thing: Please comment below or email me at vreeves95@gmail.com if you are joining me for this 40 Days of Prayer for Orphan Care.? You won?t hear back a single unsolicited thing from me; I just want a tally of how many are praying.? We?ll begin today because tonight is the night of the Journey Campus women?s gathering, at which I?d like to call them to pray with us as well.? This I can tell you for sure:? Satan NEVER asks us to pray.? So if you are willing to pray for 40 days, by all means trust that the Lord Himself has planted a seed that will grow in the grace and freedom that is life in Him.? I?m convinced the fruit will be more beautiful than anything we can imagine.
