4 million Windows 8 upgrades sold already, says Ballmer

5 hrs.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced at the company's Build conference today?that more than 4 million Windows 8 upgrades had been sold since?the operating system's official launch on Friday. He also said "tens of millions of copies" had been shipped to partners.

Ballmer said?yesterday?that "preliminary demand" was higher for Windows 8 than it was for Windows 7, but offered no numbers to back up that claim at the time. The 4 million upgrades he announced today give some idea of the OS's success, but putting the numbers in context is actually quite complicated.

Aside from yesterday's remark, Windows 8 sales have not been compared to Windows 7's ? that's?not surprising considering the OS has only been available for a few days. Even when Windows 7 was moving?enough copies?to be considered the fastest-selling OS in history, Microsoft waited several weeks before announcing how sales compared to those of Windows Vista. So it will likely be some time before more solid numbers are announced.

Singling out upgrades complicates things further: People have been registering and qualifying for these reduced-price copies of Windows 8 since June, when new PCs began to ship with the guarantee of a $15 upgrade to the new OS upon launch.

Four million may or may not be considered a large number, depending on how it is interpreted in light of total PC sales. Numbers from Gartner put worldwide PC sales in the third quarter of 2012 (which roughly corresponds to the pre-order and upgrade period for Windows 8) at about 87.5 million. Theoretically, all those PCs qualify for the $15 upgrade. The 4 million represents?a 4.5 percent conversion rate for new PCs in the first ?week ? that sounds low, but these numbers are so early that few conclusions can be drawn.

As for the tens of millions of copies shipped to partners, that comes as no surprise. PC makers are banking on the novelty of Windows 8 to sell dozens of new, touch-enabled PCs and tablets, and in order to ship with Windows 8, manufacturers like Lenovo and Acer will have ordered licenses by the million?? although they will likely offer Windows 7 for some time to come as a budget option.

There are no firm take-aways from Ballmer's numbers, which were likely shared in order to whet the appetite of shareholders, developers and reporters, all eager to know the results of Microsoft's risky experiment in redesigning Windows. The next few weeks should bring more intelligible numbers and the opportunity to compare them, apples?to?apples, with Windows 7's sales.

Hurricane Sandy: Economy should bounce back analysts say

Though hurricane Sandy will impact dozens of industries and cause billions in damages, experts say the economy should recover quickly with reconstruction after the storm.

By Christopher S. Rugaber and Martin Crutsinger,?AP Economics Writers / October 29, 2012

The floor of the New York Stock Exchange is empty of traders, Monday in New York. All major US stock and options exchanges were closed Monday with Hurricane Sandy nearing landfall on the East Coast. Trading has rarely stopped for weather.

Airlines have canceled thousands of flights, stranding travelers around the globe. Insurers are bracing for possible damages of $5 billion. Retailers face shrunken sales.

Hurricane Sandy took dead aim at New Jersey and Delaware on Monday, with sheets of rain and wind gusts of more than 90 mph knocking out electricity and causing major disruptions for companies, travelers and consumers. But for the overall economy, damage from the storm will likely be limited. And any economic growth lost to the storm in the short run will likely be restored once reconstruction begins, analysts say. Americans may even spend more before the storm when they stock up on extra food, water and batteries.

Preliminary estimates are that damage will range between $10 billion and $20 billion. That could top last year's Hurricane Irene, which cost $15.8 billion. If so, Hurricane Sandy would be among the 10 most costly hurricanes in US history. But it would still be far below the worst ? Hurricane Katrina, which cost $108 billion and caused 1,200 deaths in 2005.

"Assuming the storm simply disrupts things for a few days and it doesn't do significant damage to infrastructure, then I don't think it will have a significant national impact," Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said Monday.

The economic impact could be more severe if the storm damages a port or a major manufacturing facility such as an oil refinery, Zandi noted.

The economy expanded at an annual rate of 2 percent in the July-September quarter. Zandi said he isn't changing his forecast for similar growth in the current October-December quarter of 1.9 percent. Economic activity in October and November might slow if factory output declines and some workers are laid off temporarily and seek unemployment benefits. But the economy could strengthen in December as companies rebound.

Here's how the storm has begun to affect key areas of the economy:

Air Travel

Flights in the Northeast are all but stopped for at least two days. Airlines have canceled nearly 12,500 flights for Monday and Tuesday from Washington to Boston. The disruptions spread across the nation and overseas, stranding passengers from Hong Kong to Europe.

Total airline cancellations have already surpassed those from Hurricane Irene last year and are on par with the 14,000 that were scrapped due to the snowstorm that pounded the East Coast early last year. The Airports Council International, a trade group, said that even if the storm damage turns out to be minor, it could be a week before operations are back to normal at major East Coast airports.

Jobs data, election may overshadow earnings

By Ryan Vlastelica, Reuters

NEW YORK ? Earnings season may be only half over, but the focus on profits should subside next week as investors turn their attention to the coming election and Friday's jobs report, the last major data release before the Nov. 6 contest.

More bellwether companies are scheduled to report results in what will be another "peak week" of the earnings season. Such a flurry of numbers normally holds Wall Street's attention and can lead to market swings. But volume and volatility may be slight next week, with market participants opting to remain on the sidelines ahead of the jobs data and the election.

The U.S. government's October jobs report will give a snapshot of the current labor market. It could also give a bit of a lift to President Barack Obama, should it come out better than anticipated, or help Republican candidate Mitt Romney ? if it is worse than forecast.

Polls currently indicate that President Obama is a slight favorite to win on Nov. 6, but the race will be tight. The most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll of likely voters shows the president ahead ? 47 percent to 46 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 1.5 percent this week, largely because of a spate of earnings disappointments. The Dow Jones industrial average slid 1.8 percent this week, and the Nasdaq composite index dropped 0.6 percent.

What's notable, however, is that rebounds have been brief and quick to attract sellers.

Eyes on the election
Some investors cited the approaching election as a barrier to committing new capital to the market.

"Not many people have the stomach to plop down their bets when polling is so close," said Hayes Miller, the Boston-based head of asset allocation in North America at Baring Asset Management. "For the most part, investors will wait and see what happens."

Miller, who helps oversee more than $50 billion in assets, said the trend of caution would be especially pronounced in the health care, financial and energy sectors ??three areas that may face different regulatory outlooks, depending on the election's outcome.

"These are the ones really in play," he said.

Expectations for the next nonfarm payrolls report, set for release on Friday, are by no means certain, either. Analysts expect 124,000 jobs were added in October ? up 10,000 from September. However, the unemployment rate is also seen ticking higher ? to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent.

A payroll surprise in either direction could further cloud expectations for the election's outcome.

"A big change in payrolls could cause some uncertainty over the winner," said Jerry Harris, president of asset management at Sterne Agee, in Birmingham, Ala. "I don't expect a big surprise, but while the S&P doesn't seem especially vulnerable at these levels, I don't think it is in a hurry to go up, either."

The market will also have to contend with the weather. Hurricane Sandy is expected to hit the U.S. East Coast early in the week. New York City officials were considering closing down bus and subway lines next week.

At the New York Stock Exchange, the plans call for business as usual. The exchange issued a statement on Friday saying it has contingency plans to have the market running, adding that it has back-up power generation facilities. The Big Board will make accommodations for critical staff and traders.

Rival marketplace NASDAQ OMX said in a statement that it has plans to make sure its systems are ready. It will communicate with its members before, up to and after the storm.

Disappointing earnings
While the market at large may be waiting on news events, individual stocks could still be volatile as earnings season grinds along. More than half of the S&P 500 components have reported results so far. Next week, though, will bring reports from some marquee names such as Dow components Chevron and Pfizer, as well as S&P 500 stalwarts Visa, Ford Motor and Starbucks.

This earnings season, a number of high-profile companies have missed estimates, including this week's sour notes from Apple, United Technologies and DuPont.

With 54 percent of the S&P 500 companies having reported results so far, 62.5 percent have topped earnings expectations, under the 67 percent average over the past four quarters. Just 37 percent have topped revenue forecasts, well under the 55 percent over the past four quarters.

The earnings disappointments led to some intensive selling, driving the Dow industrials down 243.36 points on Tuesday alone.

The S&P 500 has ended down in five of the past seven trading sessions. Those declines have pushed the benchmark S&P under its 50-day moving average of around 1,434, leading some analysts to believe it may be ready for a bounce.

"We'll use any pullback as an opportunity to buy," said Chip Cobb, senior vice president at Bryn Mawr Trust Asset Management in Bryn Mawr, Pa. "Even though we've seen a number of companies miss expectations and be overly cautious, we're focusing on how a majority have beaten."

Cobb said next week he was especially looking to results from U.S. Steel. Its stock is down almost 20 percent so far this year.

"Steel companies have been participating really poorly, and I'm anxious to see if that will continue," he said.

Sailboats for sale ???

There are various yacht sales businesses and many businesses that sell and/or rent kayaks, paddle boards, surf boards, sunfish, para-sails, windsurfers, etc. These can be found at all marinas for the yachts sales and beaches for others.

As for affordable, that depends on your budget. Boats, etc. are also advertised for sale in our local papers and online.
Even Cost U less sells kayaks from time to time. There are lots of boats for sale on a regular basis.
Just depends what you are looking for and the price you are willing to pay.
There are registration and licensing fees for all watercraft.

If you are considering buying a boat/yacht or toy, you should investigate the annual fees associated with registration, mooring fees, etc.
as well as where mooring/anchoring is permitted and find out how much it shall cost to keep you boat moored out, at a dock or marina and what your options are in Hurricane Season. That goes for insurance for yachts. Many insurance companies will not cover our location.
I have friends that move their boats at the start of hurricane season and come back when it is all over. That's not in all cases but you'll pay
a higher premium if insured to be in the Caribbean even if dry docked during hurricane season which can be very expensive.

You cannot leave kayaks, small sailboats, etc., chained to a tree on any beach as DPNR will confiscate them.
Check with DPNR for associated fees, rules and regulations.

NJ residents warned about 'James Bond Gang'

A group of thieves being called the "James Bond Gang" has been caught on camera breaking into a New Jersey home. In the video, one suspect can be seen using his rear end to open the door. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By NBC News staff

A group of thieves with an affinity for burglarizing well-to-do New Jersey neighborhoods appears to have struck again, according to police, who say an Oct.?6 break-in has hallmarks of the gang's work.

The burglars, known as the "James Bond Gang," are believed to have broken into dozens of homes for more than a year and a half in the affluent towns of Somerset and Morris Counties in New Jersey, among other areas,?according to CBS New York. In March, the New Providence, N.J. deputy chief of police described how the gang -- a group of between 30 and 50 burglars -- operated.

They typically?come through "a forced entry, a dash to the bedroom to grab jewelry and cash, then a quick exit, usually through a different door," Scott Torre explained, according to NJ.com. "The thieves pick up jewelry and cash because the gold in the jewelry can be melted down within 24 hours and is unidentifiable."

In the latest incident,?a Chatham, N.J., resident returned home from vacation on Oct. 7, and discovered that his house had been broken into, NJ.com reported.

The burglars stole mostly jewelry from the Chatham house, whose owner was not identified.?The burglars moved fast and disabled the home?s alarm and video surveillance system as soon as they got into the house, but not before surveillance managed to capture four masked individuals forcing open the front door of the home, NJ.com reported.

According to NBC New York, the name James Bond was coined because in the 1980s, an original gang of burglars who successfully targeted fancy areas?used a 007-style BMW as an escape car, which was also equipped with a pipe that would spray oil at pursuers and a flip-up license plate with a blinding light below it that could be aimed at pursuers.

Police said the current-era James Bond Gang usually hits homes near major highways so they can make a quick escape, adding that when some members get arrested, new ones are recruited, according to CBS.

Steven Crawford, police chief of Mendham Township, told NJ.com?the gang is "honed in on burglary and seems to be rather structured."

"It's a problem, but they're going to get caught," Crawford said, according to NJ.com. "It's just a matter of when."

St Jude sees possible FDA warning letter; shares tumble

(Reuters) - St. Jude Medical Inc warned Wall Street that U.S. health regulators might issue a warning letter about one of its factories in California as it reported another weak quarterly performance and reeled in its outlook.

St. Jude shares fell 6.1 percent to $40.30 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

During a conference call with analysts, Chief Executive Officer Dan Starks said St. Jude might receive a warning letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration about its Sylmar, California, manufacturing plant, where it makes cardiac rhythm management products.

"It's a risk, and don't be shocked if that risk is realized," Starks said, adding that the company wanted to communicate this possibility to avoid surprising investors if it receives the warning letter.

Executives would not say whether any problem stemmed from its Durata leads - wires that connect an implantable defibrillator to the heart.

Durata leads came under scrutiny earlier this year as a prominent cardiologist raised safety concerns. An earlier version of the Durata lead, called Riata, was recalled because the insulation covering the wires wore away, exposing the cables.

Chief Financial Officer John Heinmiller told Reuters there were five facilities around the world that make St. Jude's cardiac rhythm management products and components.

Asked why management thought a warning letter might be coming, Heinmiller said: "It is too early to speculate."

Typically, the FDA issues warning letters 60 to 90 days after it inspects a facility. Heinmiller said the inspection was nearly at an end, but would not say what questions inspectors asked or what comments they made during the process.

Sometimes companies get warning letters over their record-keeping practices, rather than the actual production of a device or component.

"Even if they get a warning letter, I don't think it'll have any impact on their business," said Jeff Jonas, a portfolio manager for Gabelli Health and Wellness Trust Mutual Fund. "But it's a negative in light of their lead issues, and the weaker sales. I'm betting Medtronic will be the main beneficiary."

Despite the warning letter, Starks said on the conference call that he still believed the market for cardiac rhythm products will stabilize by the middle of next year.

Starks acknowledged that the company had been selling fewer leads even as it sells more implantable defibrillators.

"We've lost share in high-voltage leads," he said. "There's no question about it."

NET EARNINGS DECLINE

Also on Wednesday, the company posted lower third-quarter net earnings due to softer sales as well as restructuring and other charges.

Net income fell to $176 million, or 56 cents per share, from $227 million, or 69 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding the charges, earnings were 83 cents per share, 2 cents higher than the analysts' average estimate, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Sales fell to $1.33 billion from $1.38 billion as austerity measures in European markets led to weak demand there. Sales fell in every business unit except for atrial fibrillation.

Sales of cardiac rhythm products, including implantable defibrillators, fell 8 percent to $691 million. Sales of defibrillators, known as ICDs, dropped 7 percent to $412 million.

Starks said he expected ICD sales of $2.832 billion to $2.862 billion for 2012, down from a previous forecast of $2.86 billion to $2.90 billion.

He also said he expected St. Jude's share of that market to remain "stable to slightly higher" in 2012, backing off his previous outlook of a gain of 0.5 percentage point.

The disclosure about the possibility of a warning letter has caused significant consternation among investors, Bernstein Research analyst Derrick Sung wrote in a note to clients.

"The fact that St. Jude took the step to disclose the potential for a warning letter leads us to believe that it is likely to happen since the company is closely involved in the inspection process," he wrote, but added that the impact would probably be limited and manageable.

Like other analysts, Sung said he was less concerned about the possibility of a warning letter than he was about the deceleration in the company's ICD sales.

Mainly, a warning letter would hold up premarket approval of any new cardiac rhythm management devices, he said, but analysts are not expecting St. Jude to introduce any major new products in that category.

Sung said he did not see a warning letter or the FDA inspection as significantly increasing the risk of any type of further regulatory action involving the Riata or Durata leads.

"The inspection and warning letter would be focused on quality system violations whereas the Riata/Durata concerns are a design issue," the note said. "We see these as two separate items."

Boston Scientific Corp , the third-largest maker of heart rhythm products after Medtronic and St. Jude, is scheduled to report its third-quarter results on Thursday.

Longtime GOP Senate moderate Arlen Specter bucked his party

A political moderate, Arlen Specter was swept into the Senate in the Reagan landslide of 1980. But the former Democrat was not shy about bucking fellow Republicans.

Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, the outspoken Pennsylvania centrist whose switch from Republican to Democrat ended a 30-year career in which he played a pivotal role in several Supreme Court nominations, died at his home in Philadelphia Sunday.?

Specter rose to prominence in the 1960s as an aggressive Philadelphia prosecutor and as an assistant counsel to the Warren Commission, developing the single-bullet theory that posited just one bullet struck both President Kennedy and Texas Gov. John Connally ? an assumption critical to the argument that presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. The theory remains controversial and was the focus of Oliver Stone's 1991 movie "JFK."

In 1987, Specter helped thwart the Supreme Court nomination of former federal appeals Judge Robert H. Bork ? earning him conservative enemies who still bitterly refer to such rejections as being "borked."

But four years later, Specter was criticized by liberals for his tough questioning of Anita Hill at Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court nomination hearings and for accusing her of committing "flat-out perjury." The nationally televised interrogation incensed women's groups and nearly cost him his seat in 1992.

Specter was Pennsylvania's longest-serving senator when Democrats picked then-U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak over him in the 2010 primary, despite Specter's endorsements by President Barack Obama and other Democratic leaders. Sestak lost Specter's seat to conservative Republican Rep. Pat Toomey by 2 percentage points.

A political moderate, Specter was swept into the Senate in the Reagan landslide of 1980.

He took credit for helping to defeat President Clinton's national health care plan ? the complexities of which he highlighted in a gigantic chart that hung on his office wall for years afterward ? and helped lead the investigation into Gulf War syndrome. Following the Iran-Contra scandal, he pushed legislation that created the inspectors general of the CIA.

As a senior member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, Specter pushed for increased funding for stem-cell research, breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease, and supported several labor-backed initiatives in a GOP-led Congress. He also doggedly sought federal funds for local projects in his home state.

The former Democrat was not shy about bucking fellow Republicans.

In 1995, he launched a presidential bid, denouncing religious conservatives as the "fringe" that plays too large a role in setting the party's agenda. Specter, who was Jewish, bowed out before the first primary because of lackluster fundraising.

(AP) ? Syria's state-run news agency SANA says Syria decided to ban Turkish Airlines flights from Syrian airspace.

SANA sent the announcement to reporters in a text message late Saturday, but did not elaborate.

The decision came three days after Turkey intercepted a Syrian passenger plane en route from Moscow to Damascus and seized what it said was military equipment on board.

Tensions between the neighbors have been rising since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad erupted 19 months ago.

Turkey sides with the rebels, providing political support and a rear base. Turkey has also begun retaliating for stray Syrian shells and mortar rounds hitting Turkish soil.

Don't Eidolons Have Anything Better to Do? | Video Games ...

Today, a steadfast bastion of the Final Fantasy realm is pilloried, tarred, feathered and mocked by the merry mocking mockster of mock that I am. We speak of summon monsters, Eidolons, Guardian Forces, or any other lofty moniker these abominations have been granted over the prolific past of the series.

These formidable entities include the quintessential firey stylings of Ifrit, a large Minotaur-esque gentleman (clad only in minute underpants that bulge disconcertingly and make us fervently wish to punch our own eyes in the face), Shiva the ice spirit, and Odin, God of stabbing crotches with humongous swords (and closet collector of My Little Pony dolls. Oh, the egregious harm that revelation would cause his masculine image! Were it not, naturellement, an outrageous falsehood).

Eidolons- Shiva

The primary utility of these celestial beings is to aid your party in battle. They are summoned, discharge a mass-ravaging attack of their element du jour, and sidle off again in a clandestine manner, leaving your opponents languishing in a blood-bleeding eviscerated mess (and, presumably, expansive urine puddle) on the pavement. They are also acclaimed for giving the White Mages of the cosmos some form of offensive ability. Bereft of these guys, the mages? piteous staff-flailing is about as physically imposing as a puppy with no legs.

Why, prithee, do they do so? These quasi-deities are largely content to watch our impotent, feeble mortal flesh-bag protagonists battle alone. They lounge in the opulence of Mount Eidolon, fed grapes by dusky maidens. Sixty-foot-tall ones too, I?d wager. One can envisage Ifrit up there in his tiny wrestler Y-fronts, Shiva clad in that raunch-tastic ice bikini of hers, pointing and laughing:
?Lo! Those paltry humans are attempting to murderize a really rather large dragon! Shall we alight to their aid with all due haste, like the almighty Gods we are??
?Nuts to that. I?m watching the game, whilst intermittently scratching my ass.?
?For shame, Ifrit! For shame! Fie upon you!?
?Very well. If you insist, I shall propel an ACTUAL MASSIVE METEORITE -which is on fire, mark you, I feel I must stress that fact- into that horrific beast?s delicate facial region.?

Able to convene such forces on a mere whim, why does the party so frequently resort to poking their foes with daggers and suchlike? It?s akin to jabbing a rhino in the posterior with a toothpick. Most pertinently, though, why can?t Eidolons serve as the harbingers of glory and hope for the planet, in lieu of meagre manfolk?
Won?t somebody think of the children?

Movie review: 'Searching for Sugar Man' can't find all the answers ...

Hal Wilson | courtesy Sony Pictures Classics Rodriguez, the '70s rock star, is the subject of the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man."

There?s a fascinating story in the rise and fall of singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, "the Latin Bob Dylan," and it?s too bad that the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" doesn?t tell enough of it.

Here?s the bare-bones tale: Rodriguez (he went by his last name professionally) was discovered in a Detroit bar, recorded two moving albums that failed to sell, and never was heard from again ? except in South Africa, where bootlegs of his plaintive songs about life and activism caught on with the opponents of apartheid, and his haunting songs became massive hits.

?Searching for Sugar Man?

Opens Friday, Oct. 5, at the Broadway Centre Cinemas; rated PG-13 for brief strong language and some drug references; 86 minutes. For more movie reviews, visit nowsaltlake.com/movies.

Director Malik Bendjelloul traces the origins of Rodriguez?s career and music, and talks to the South Africans who were inspired by his music and labored to uncover what happened to the man.

The search yields surprises, but can?t crack the big mystery of Rodriguez himself. And for that you can blame Rodriguez, for remaining enigmatic, and Bendjelloul, who seems more engaged with the legend and the music than with the real person.

Lemonade stand vs. cancer: Boy raises $80,000

By Gordon Tokumatsu and Julie Brayton, NBCLosAngeles.com

LA HABRA, Calif. -- When Max Igoe was 5 years old, breast cancer claimed the life of his mother's best friend, 37-year-old Beth Rorman. The little boy found himself expressing his pain with the kind of idea only a kindergartner might conceive: a lemonade stand.

"It's just the first thing that popped into my head," said Max, now 14.

Nicki Igoe, Max's mother, said her son was aware her friend was sick.

"He knew that she had something called cancer," she recalled. Rorman battled the illness for some 10 years.

Max told his mom he would set up a lemonade stand near their La Habra home, and raise money for breast cancer research. Maybe even help them discover a cure.

"I explained to him that it wasn't the olden days. That people don't buy lemonade from peoples' driveways like they used to," Nicki said.

But she didn't want to hurt his feelings, either, not while he was mourning "Auntie Beth's" loss. So she helped him mix some juice, prop up a table and hand-print some signs.

This weekend, they will set up Max's stand for the ninth year in a row after years full of hundreds of gallons of pink sweet liquid, numerous raffles, "casino-night" fundraisers and days of labor.

Max has exceeded his wildest dreams: "We've raised over $80,000."

His goal? "A million dollars." And a cure.

Nicki said after every sale, they ask him if he wants to continue, and his answer for the last nine years has been the same: Yes.

Egypt's Mursi removes legal official seen as Mubarak loyalist | Firstpost

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egypt?s president removed the general prosecutor from his post on Thursday in an apparent attempt to appease demonstrators who accused him of offering weak evidence in a trial of Mubarak-era officials accused of planning attacks on protesters last year.

General Prosecutor Abdel Maguid Mahmoud, appointed in July 2006, was among officials who drew the wrath of protesters after the fall of Hosni Mubarak on February 11, 2011.

President Mohamed Mursi?s decision came after a Cairo court on Wednesday acquitted 24 of Mubarak?s loyalist officials accused of sending men on horseback and camels to attack protesters during last year?s uprising.

MENA state news agency later said Maguid had ?said he did not resign from his post as General Prosecutor and that he will still carry out the duties according to the law of judicial authority?.

Egyptian law protects the general prosecutor from being dismissed. To surmount this hurdle, Mursi appointed Maguid ambassador to the Vatican, effectively removing him from his post.

?President Mohamed Mursi issued a decree appointing Abdel Maguid Mahmoud as ambassador to the Vatican,? Ahmed Abdel Atti, Mursi?s aide, said in a statement on Thursday.

Another presidential aide told Reuters that an ?assistant to the general prosecutor will take up his responsibilities until a new one is appointed?.

A judges? club supporting Mahmoud held an emergency meeting late on Thursday during which they denounced Mursi?s decision to remove Mahmoud from his post, saying that Egyptian law on judicial authority gives immunity to judges.

The judges demanded that Mursi withdraw his decision to remove Mahmoud.

?Egypt?s law on judicial authority offers judges immunity and prevents exiling them from their posts in order to protect their independence from the executive authority,? Waleed Shafie, deputy director of the appeals court in Alexandria, told the Internet portal Ahram.

Many Egyptians believe Mahmoud was anything but an independent figure and see him as having done the bidding of Mubarak, who appointed him.

So the new "civilizations are only a first generation because reproduction does not occur. However if there are mutations to essentiall "clone" one's self then the genetic structure would be immensily inferior to that of a human as things such as diseases mutants could never build up resistences to. So in other words this is an apocalyptic world filled with dum people with the IQ of less than 80.

Iranian minister woos Indian businesses

NEW DELHI (AP) ? As Western sanctions squeeze Iran and its currency tumbles, the country's energy minister wooed Indian businesses on Wednesday for more investment and trade.

Majid Namjoo told a meeting of Indian business leaders that there are huge opportunities to do business with Iran's private sector, which remains largely unaffected by sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union.

Namjoo is on a four-day visit to India to explore the possibilities of trade and joint ventures in renewable energy, power, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and food processing.

The United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions on Iran to deter it from pursuing a nuclear weapons program. Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

The U.S. has pressed India to scale back its imports of Iranian crude to support those sanctions, but energy-starved India remains one of Iran's biggest oil purchasers.

Indian National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon denied on Wednesday that Iran was a divisive issue between India and the United States.

"We both seek the same end, a negotiated resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue without the spread of nuclear weapons," he said. "We may have different judgments as how to get to that goal."

Namjoo said the Iranian government has been privatizing government companies to reduce the impact of Western sanctions, and that a large number are open for investments.

"We are trying to make Iranian industries more competitive in price and quality. This is a big opportunity for Indian companies to invest in Iran, or in third countries through joint ventures with Iranian firms," Namjoo said.

He said Iran is preparing for a future when it will run out of oil and gas resources and is searching for renewable energy options.

Namjoo said India and Iran could work together in the field of hydroelectric energy in which Iranian companies have extensive expertise. Iran is exploring the feasibility of exporting some 4,000 megawatts of electricity to India.

India has been actively searching for investment deals with Iran as an ad hoc barter arrangement to pay its oil bills.

India imports around 70 percent of its oil needs, of which about 11 percent comes from Iran. It has been facing enormous problems over payments for the Iranian oil.

New Delhi initially channeled payments through German-based Europaisch-Iranische Handelsbank. But after the sanctions kicked in, the two countries moved to Turkey's Turkiye Halk Bankasi AS to facilitate payments.

That channel may also become inoperable after EU intervention. In February, Iran and India reached an agreement under which India would pay for 45 percent of the oil in Indian rupees, with the rest to be settled through a barter arrangement in goods and services.

The fallout of the sanctions is beginning to be felt by Iran, its currency and its people.

The Iranian rial, which has lost more than half its value in the past year, last week tumbled to its lowest value against the U.S. dollar ? 35,000 rials to a dollar. The currency's plunge was marked by small street protests in the tightly controlled society.

But a defiant Namjoo told journalists that while his country could weather the effect of sanctions, Iran's European neighbors were worse off.

"Iran is a big country. We will survive the sanctions," he said.

India, too, has been slowly easing its dependence on Iranian oil.

India also has strategic interests in the Iranian neighborhood. New Delhi is helping to develop the southern Iranian port of Chabahar and a rail link that will offer it direct access to landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asia.
