On his radio program Tuesday, radio host Tom Joyner announced that he would fully pay for Rachel Jeantel to attend a historically black college or university of her choice.

Jeantel is the friend of Trayvon Martin who was the last person to speak to him before his February 2012 death and the star witness in the trial against George Zimmerman.

Joyner told Jeantel on his radio program early Tuesday, ?if you want to graduate from high school, and go to an HBCU?if you want to do that, I want to help you do that.?

Jeantel is currently 19 years old and is about to enter her senior year of high school in Miami. She?s scheduled to graduate next spring, at the age of 20.

Joyner continued, ?I will help you get tutors to get you out of high school, tutors to help you pass the SAT and I will give you a full ride scholarship to any HBCU you?d like.?

Jeantel thanked Joyner and said she was ?shocked? by the offer.

She also said that she?d like to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Reached for comment, the president of the National Association For Equal Opportunity in Education ? the non-profit umbrella organization for America?s HBCU?s ? released a statement to the Daily Caller, applauding the news.

?This generous offer typifies Dr. Tom Joyner,? Lezli Baskerville told TheDC.

?An HBCU would be an ideal environment in which Ms. Jeantel could realize her educational aspirations because of their academic excellence and signature protective, supportive, nurturing environments,? Baskerville continued.

Baskerville said that Jeantel has been ?pilloried and ridiculed in the national media.?

At an HBCU, Baskerville explained, ?Ms. Jeantel will be able to realize her educational aspirations in a welcoming and supportive environment.?

Because of Jeantel?s ?tri-cultural, tri-lingual background? which includes fluency in Haitian Creole, Spanish, and English, Baskerville said ?off of the top of my head, I would suggest that Ms. Jeantel consider Southern University New Orleans (SUNO) because of the French Creole culture in New Orleans.?

Baskerville said that SUNO ?has one of the nation?s leading criminal justice programs.?

In an interview that aired on CNN?s Anderson Cooper Monday night, one of the Zimmerman jurors said that she felt sorry for Jeantel because of her poor education. Juror B37 told Cooper, ?I felt very sorry for her.?

?I think she felt inadequate toward everyone because of her education and her communication skills,? the woman said.

Jeantel told CNN?s Piers Morgan in an interview that she felt ?anger? at the juror?s statements and explained that her speech is complicated by an underbite.

During cross-examination by Zimmerman attorney Don West, Jeantel said that she was unable to read cursive.

Jeantel was also shown to have been untruthful about her personal life in the lead up to the trial. She admitted that she lied about her age and her whereabouts during Martin?s funeral ? a fact Zimmerman?s lawyers sought to use to impeach her testimony in the minds of the jurors.

Senators scramble to cut deal on nominees, avoid showdown

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. senators scrambled on Tuesday to cut a deal to confirm seven of President Barack Obama's executive-branch nominees and end a Democratic threat to strip Republicans of their power to block such nominations with procedural roadblocks known as filibusters.

"We are making progress," said Republican Senator Bob Corker, one of a number of lawmakers involved in bipartisan talks over nominations that intensified in recent days.

It remained unclear if they would have an agreement by 11 a.m. ET, when the Democratic-led Senate is set to begin voting on the first of the seven nominees.

The nominations are: Richard Cordray to be director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; Richard Griffin, Sharon Block and Mark Pearce to be members of the National Labor Relations Board; Fred Hochberg to be president of the U.S. Export-Import Bank; Thomas Perez to be labor secretary, and Gina McCarthy to be head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Filibuster have long been a central tool in the Senate to permit the minority to extend debate and pressure the majority to compromise.

But in recent years, each side, when in the majority, has accused the minority of using the filibuster to create partisan gridlock rather than to find bipartisan solutions.

Democrats have accused Republicans of selectively blocking Obama nominees, not because of their qualifications but because Republicans do not like the agencies that they would head.

Reid has said that unless all seven nominees up for votes on Tuesday are confirmed, Democrats were prepared to ignite for the first time "the nuclear option," a procedural power play that would be used to change Senate rules on filibusters.

Democrats, who control the Senate 54-46, have said their aim would be to reduce to 51 from the current 60 the number of votes needed to end filibusters against executive branch nominees.

Normally 67 votes are needed to change Senate rules, but Democrats could do it with just 51 under the nuclear option, which would involve a ruling by the Democratic chair.

Such action would cap years of Senate partisan battles and paralysis and likely trigger even more fights and gridlock between Obama's Democrats and Republicans.

While Reid has threatened to change the rules on filibusters, he has said he wants to maintain the 60-vote threshold needed to end its use on judicial nominations and legislation.

Members of the Senate have been fighting over Obama's nominations for years. After Reid scheduled votes on the seven nominees for Tuesday, all 100 senators met for more than three hours Monday night to again try to hash out their differences.

According to Senate aides, Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell offered to permit all seven nominees to be confirmed, if Reid promised in return not to try to change rules on filibusters for the rest of this Congress.

Reid countered by asking if McConnell would promise not to filibuster any more of Obama's nominees, an aide said.

McConnell declined, prompting Reid to declare, "No deal," the aide said.

"A lot of folks said we should avoid this, and urged the leaders to find a way," Democratic Senator Carl Levin told a breakfast meeting of reporters on Tuesday sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor newspaper.

A Senate Democratic aide said there was the possibility that negotiations could continue throughout the day, even as votes on the nominations were being held on the Senate floor.

Teams all throughout the country rely on their quarterbacks, but in the case of Price, his potential and his production haven?t always coincided.

In 2011, Price threw for 33 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, racking up 3,000-plus yards. In 2012, his interceptions increased to 13, while his scores plummeted to just 19. He threw the ball 70 more times than he did the year before, yet he threw for about 300 fewer yards.

A big part of Price?s struggles came from the offensive line. Health and experience were both a problem, and a lack of protection put the quarterback in a tough spot. The O-line is going to be another variable in 2013. It?s largely the same group that played in 2012, and while that sounds like a recipe for disaster, another year of experience and a hopefully healthy season could be all Price needs to find success.

Also on that side of the ball, a young set of skill players created for inconsistency, but the potential for potency is there. The top tailbacks were underclassmen, and the top six receiving weapons were also sophomores and freshmen. As if this team needs any more variables, off-the-field troubles make Austin Sefarian-Jenkins and Kassen Williams worth keeping an eye on, but if they can stay out of trouble, they?ll team up with Price and tailback Bishop Sankey to create on heck of an athletic attack.

After watching this team in the spring, it?s clear that the defense has potential. We didn?t see the whole playbook when it came to the new up-tempo offense, but even so, the defense showed that it can be the anchor of this year?s group.

Defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox will have to replace Desmond Trufant, but he has a slew of returners vying to step up. With youth comes potential, and the nice part about having so many underclassmen in 2012 is that they?re turning into experience for 2013.

Washington?s season is going to kick off with a bang one way or the other, as a rematch against Boise State will set the tone. If this team wins its season-opening match, it will reinforce everything it worked on with the new offense. If it loses, it will be a disappointing start to a year with so much potential.

It?s no secret that UW is one giant question mark, and by the time it faces Stanford and Oregon in back-to-back weeks, it had better have some of those questions figured out. If those questions are unanswered when the competition ramps up, another seven-win season is a legitimate possibility. However, if confidence is high, the powerhouses better be on the lookout.

The next time you change the ring tone on your cellphone, consider choosing the sound of a cash register ringing. Or maybe The Beatles' song "Taxman."

Washington cellphone users have the dubious distinction of paying the second-highest taxes in the country. Nebraska has the highest cellphone taxes.

It's something you may have suspected the last time you checked your cellphone bill ? if you were able to decipher it.

And if that's not enough to make you swear at your iPhone, consider this insult added to injury: The two neighboring states have cellphone taxes among the nation's lowest.

A study by the Tax Foundation says the combination of federal, state and local taxes on mobile phone service for Washington customers adds about 25 percent to the bill's bottom line. The exact amount varies a bit from one community to the next because of differences in the local sales tax. There are also business taxes, utility taxes and fees for emergency service.

"A lot of overlapping jurisdictions have been given overlapping authority," said Scott Drenkard, who co-authored the study for the foundation. The state and many local jurisdictions both charge a fee for 911 services. The federal government tacks on something called a USF.

"It's like alphabet soup. Who actually knows what the federal USF involves?" asked Drenkard, who explained it stands for a universal service fee that subsidizes service to rural areas.

With so many government entities having taxing authority and with cellphone use rising, taxes have gone up in most states, Drenkard said. Cellphones are now taxed at higher rates than most other consumer items, including alcohol and cigarettes in some states.

The number of taxes and fees on cellphones is so complicated in Washington that the Department of Revenue couldn't easily determine the total amount raised last year.

The Tax Foundation, which argues that taxes should be applied as broadly as possible and kept as low as possible, questions the fairness of cellphone taxes. It also notes the taxes and fees are easy to hide from consumers.

"It's easy to do it in a way that people aren't fully aware," Drenkard said. "It's a less transparent method."

There's another quirk of cellphone taxes that most consumers don't realize. Because the phones and the service are portable, determining what taxes should apply can be complicated. Where the phone was purchased? Where the user first contracted for service? Where most of the calls are made?

Federal law says the taxes are based on the user's primary address, so a former Idaho resident who moves to Washington probably can't escape the higher taxes by keeping that 208 area code. And under law, what the phone company says for taxes goes. "It's unappealable," Drenkard said.

In a review of two recent novels that feature professor-student affairs, reviewer Michelle Dean asks where is the frank discussion of power?? She writes,

The professor-student romance debate similarly breaks down, for the most part, to two opposing views. In one corner you have your Roiphes and your Paglias, who style themselves as revolutionaries for celebrating the power dynamics of the status quo. In the other you have feminists more aligned with Andrea Dworkin who seem to believe one can remove power from relationships entirely.

(Presumably, she meant to write instead ?feminists more aligned with Andrea Dworkin who seem to believe one can?t remove power from relationships entirely.? At least, I?ve never read a word of Dworkin to mean that there was any such thing as sexuality without power.? This is a woman who was closely aligned with Catherine Mackinnon, the woman who wrote ?man f^(ks woman, subject verb object.?)

So what do these new novelistic treatments of professor-student sexual relationships have to say about them?? Both Susan Choi?s My Education and Jessica Lott?s The Rest of Us ?seem ultimately uncomfortable with the very subject they have taken on?as though their authors are ultimately unwilling to confront the thicket of moral issues such relationships raise.?? In Choi?s novel, the relationship is between two women, and in Lott?s book it?s a heterosexual affair, but both books ultimately shy away from talking about power.

Part of the reason, Dean suggests, is that ?neither author makes her protagonist the actual student, in the literal sense, of her lover. Terry, the student in Lott?s book, only audited a class by her eventual lover Rhinehart, a famous poet and professor. Choi?s Regina becomes involved with her professor?s wife, Martha, who is herself an academic.? But Dean doesn?t buy this evasion:

If one party is always a teacher, and the other a student, in a relationship, then someone has the upper hand. That someone is Henry Higgins to his Eliza. Both Choi and Lott are coy on this point. It is out of vogue to talk about power and its uses in any direct way, so they don?t. And funnily enough, it is the silence about that dynamic that, more than anything, brings out the frustrated Puritan in women who look from afar upon these relationships. Like me, reading these books, thinking about the stories I used to hear of the professors who harvested the undergraduates each fall, remembering how prudish it felt to observe the predictable clich? of it all.

Of course, all love has an element of worship, and worshipper and worshipee are not unlike student and teacher. But the gold standards of romance, those beloved 19^th-century novels, understood that the worship isn?t always deserved, and provokes suffering. Think of Colonel Brandon waiting at a respectful distance for Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility. (It helps to lean on Alan Rickman?s heavy-lidded interpretation here.) Think of how Jane Eyre resolves to deal with Mr. Rochester?s deceit: ?Not a human being that ever lived could wish to be loved better than I was loved; and him who thus loved me I absolutely worshipped: and I must renounce love and idol.?

So it?s curious to find that in The Rest of Us and My Education, the renunciation of the teacher-idol never happens. Terry and Rhinehart do not live happily ever after, but neither does Terry begin to see his faults clearly. Regina and Martha are able to treat each other more maturely because of the passage of years?and so the reader is robbed of the chance to say to Martha: ?My God, what were you thinking?? And never mind the reader?rebellion doesn?t seem to be an option even for the students, either. They remain simple receptors of the teacher?s message in the end. All faults are the students? own; they were the ones with growing up to do.

Both books, then, ignore the crucial emotional experience of resenting the person who made you worship them when you were young and impressionable. As one should, by the way.

Although it?s feminism that encouraged us to think about power in sexual relationships, it?s clearly another countervailing? force in feminist thought that animates Choi?s and Lott?s novels:? the rejection of women?s victimhood.? I see the same thing in a great deal of feminist historical scholarship, too.? Feminist scholars are extraordinarily reluctant to portray their subjects as victims in any way.

This is especially true in recent women?s history.? For example, over my recent vacation I read Lois Banner?s recent biography of Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn (2012).? I found Banner?s argument that MM was an invention of herself and a second-wave feminist avant la lettre compelling and convincing.? However, I wondered how that reading of MM?s life squares with its sad ending:? Banner mentions only in passing that MM was bugged by J. Edgar Hoover at the time of her death!? I think it?s wrong to see MM only as a victim or creation manipulated by others, but we can see her as both the author of her own life and also the victim of circumstances beyond her ability to control as well.

Young women?s sexuality can be used as a kind of power, and it can make them feel powerful.? But it?s not unambiguously an instrument to power in the way that money or real power is?the kind that the Kennedys, Hoover, and Giancana possessed and used ruthlessly.? I think that historians and novelists alike can tell women?s stories in complex ways that avoid both total victimhood or total empowerment, if they want to.

Some Guy Is Suing Apple Because He Wants Apple to Protect Him from Porn

In this most ridiculous lawsuit that should expose the idiocy of mankind and/or lawsuits in general, a lawyer is suing Apple because of porn. Seriously. The lawyer is seeking damages against Apple because it makes devices that can display porn. He wrote a 50 page complaint over this!

Chris Sevier, an attorney in Nashville, is the plaintiff in this inane lawsuit and he wants Apple to install a filter in its browser to block all Internet porn. That is a real thing a real person wants. He suggests that if a person over 18 wants to view porn, that they contact Apple and "sign a form acknowledge the ills of pornography, and receive a code to remove the filter." That is a real thing a real person wants.

He uses words like "biological sensibilities of a male" and "cyber beauties" and that Apple employees know "that a man is born full of harmonies and attacked to by women engaging in sexual acts with the intent to cause vicarious appeal". To quote Sevier himself in the lawsuit:

UNFAIR COMPETITION AND INTERFERENCE OF THE MARITAL CONTRACT: The Plaintiff became totally out of synch in his romantic relationship with his wife, which was a consequence of his use of his Apple product. The Plaintiff began desiring, younger more beautiful girls featured in porn videos than his wife, who was no longer 21. His failed marriage caused the Plaintiff to experience emotional distress to the point of hospitalization. The Plaintiff could no longer tell the difference between internet pornography and tangible intercourse due to the content he accessed through the Apple products, which failed to provide him with warnings of the dangers of online pornography whatsoever.

He also tells of accidentally misspelling facebook which led him to fuckbook and how Apple basically needs to protect people from themselves. It's high comedy. Penn State ex-president files libel lawsuit papers

(AP) Penn State's former president Graham Spanier initiated a libel and defamation case Thursday against Louis Freeh, the former FBI director who a year ago produced a report for the school that was highly critical of Spanier's role in the child sex abuse scandal involving longtime assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

Paperwork filed in Centre County, where the school is located, disclosed little about the nature of his claims but checked off a box on a court system form that described the case as "slander/libel/defamation."

The filing was made one day before the one-year anniversary of Freeh's report, which concluded that Spanier, late coach Joe Paterno and other high-ranking Penn State administrators failed to protect children against Sandusky. Under Pennsylvania law, those who believe they have been libeled or defamed have a year to initiate a civil lawsuit.

Calls and emails seeking comment from Freeh and from Spanier lawyer Elizabeth Ainslie were not returned. Along with Freeh, the paperwork also names as a defendant the law firm where Freeh works.

The Freeh report said Spanier told Freeh's investigators that he never heard anyone say Sandusky was sexually abusing children. But Freeh wrote it was more reasonable to conclude that Spanier, Paterno, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz "repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky's child abuse from the authorities, the university's board of trustees, the Penn State community and the public at large."

Curley, who was placed on leave to serve out his contract, and Schultz, now retired, were both charged in November 2011, when Sandusky was arrested, and accused of perjury and failure to properly report suspected abuse.

Spanier was forced out as president at that time, and a year later was himself charged as part of an alleged cover-up of complaints about Sandusky. A school spokesman said Thursday Spanier remains a faculty member on administrative leave.

Paterno died of complications from lung cancer in January 2012 and was not charged with any crime. The Freeh report's scathing conclusions about the former coach was followed more than a week later by the school administration's decision to remove his statue from outside the football stadium.

Additional charges were also filed against Curley and Schultz last November, but there has not been a preliminary hearing yet because of a legal dispute about the role played in the grand jury proceedings by Cynthia Baldwin, a former state Supreme Court justice who at the time was Penn State's top lawyer.

On Tuesday, a district judge in the Harrisburg suburbs announced the preliminary hearing would be held for Spanier, Schultz and Curley starting July 29 in the county courthouse. The hearing will determine if there are grounds to forward the case to county court for trial. All three men have vigorously denied the allegations against them.

Sandusky, 69, was convicted of 45 counts of child sexual abuse, including violent attacks on boys inside school facilities, after a three-week trial last summer in which eight victims testified against him. He is serving a 30- to 60-year prison term and maintains he was wrongfully convicted. He is pursuing appeals.

Republicans defend Texas abortion proposal

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Texas Republicans turned back amendment after amendment that Democrats offered Friday to try to change proposed new abortion restrictions, refusing to allow exceptions for cases of rape and incest or expanding exceptions for the health of the mother.

Democrats have called the sweeping GOP proposal unnecessary and unconstitutional, but pressed for minor changes to soften the impact of the bill.

The Senate's debate took place between a packed gallery of demonstrators, with anti-abortion activists wearing blue and abortion-rights supporters wearing orange. Security was tight, and state troopers reported confiscating bottles of urine and feces as they worked to prevent another attempt to stop the Republican majority from passing a proposal that has put Texas at the center of the nation's abortion debate.

Senators could hear hundreds of protesters outside of the chamber in the Capitol rotunda cheering, chanting and singing, "We're not going to take it anymore." Some wore gynecological devices around their necks. Supporters of the restrictions carried photos of fetuses and Bible verses, praying in the hallway for the bill to pass.

The Senate could vote on the abortion restrictions later Friday or early Saturday, sending the bill to Republican Gov. Rick Perry, who has said he will sign it. The Republican majority is expected to pass the bill, with Democrats left to do little more than enter into the legislative record material that could help defeat it in federal court.

The circus-like atmosphere in the Texas Capitol marked the culmination of weeks of protests, the most dramatic of which came June 25 in the final minutes of the last special legislative session, when a Democratic filibuster and subsequent protest prevented the bill from becoming law.

House Bill 2 would require doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals, allow abortions only in surgical centers, limit where and when women may take abortion-inducing pills and ban abortions after 20 weeks. Only five out of 42 existing abortion clinics meet the requirements to be a surgical center, and clinic owners say they can't afford to upgrade or relocate.

Sen. Glen Hegar of Katy, the bill's Republican author, argued that all abortions, including those induced with medications, should take place in an ambulatory surgical center in case of complications.

Democrats pointed out that childbirth is more dangerous than an abortion and there have been no serious problems with women taking abortion drugs at home. They also introduced amendments to add exceptions for cases of rape and incest and to remove some of the more restrictive clauses.

Sen. Carlos Uresti, a San Antonio Democrat, proposed an exception to the 20-week ban for child victims of rape or incest.

"I don't think it's unreasonable to give these victims an additional month to make up their minds," Uresti said.

But Hegar responded that if an abortion were necessary to protect a child from imminent harm or death, an abortion after 20 weeks would be allowed.

Hegar also rejected an amendment to expand that exception to make it for the mother's health and not limit it to imminent harm.

Earlier, Sen. Rodney West, a Dallas Democrat, asked why Hegar was pushing restrictions that federal courts in other states had suspended as possibly unconstitutional.

"There will be a lawsuit. I promise you," West said, raising his right hand as if taking an oath.

The bill under consideration mirrors restrictions passed in Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Alabama, Kansas, Wisconsin and Arizona. In North Carolina, lawmakers are considering a measure that would allow state health officials to apply standards for ambulatory surgical centers to abortion clinics.

Passing the law in Texas would be a major victory for anti-abortion activists in the nation's second most-populous state. Hegar acknowledged working with anti-abortion groups to draft the legislation. A lawsuit originating in Texas would also likely win a sympathetic hearing at the conservative 5th Circuit Court of Appeals on its way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Sen. John Whitmire, a Houston Democrat, said it was clear the bill was part of national conservative agenda attempting to ban abortion and infringe on women's rights one state at a time. He pressed Hegar on why the Texas Medical Association, Texas Hospital Association and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology opposed the bill.

He asked Hegar how he could ignore these experts.

"There are differences in the medical profession," Hegar insisted, rejecting the criticism. "I don't believe this legislation will majorly impede the doctor-patient relationship."

Sen. Bob Deuell, a Greenville Republican and a doctor, defended the bill, saying abortion clinics "had not maintained the proper standard of care."

The Senate's leader, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, was determined to keep the vote on track. The Texas Constitution gives him the authority to jail anyone who breaks the chamber's rules of decorum, which stipulate that there can be no demonstrations or attempts to disrupt the Senate's work.

In addition to the jars of suspected urine and feces, officers took paint, glitter, confetti and feminine hygiene products from people seeking to ender the gallery, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The issue has been simmering for months in Texas.

Democrats successfully blocked the bill in the regular legislative session. Then, during the first special session, the Senate didn't take up the bill until the final day. That allowed Fort Worth Sen. Wendy Davis to use a filibuster to delay a vote. When Republicans rushed to try to pass the bill in the session's final 15 minutes, angry protesters began shouting and screaming from the gallery. Dewhurst could only watch with frustration as a half-dozen state troopers tried to remove more than 450 people.

Democrats see in the protests an opportunity that could help them break a 20-year statewide losing streak. They believe Republicans have overreached in trying to appease their base and alienated suburban women, a constituency that helped President Barack Obama win re-election.

Sometimes you just want to enjoy TV without making a commitment, and time-shifting broadcasts either means building your own HTPC or purchasing an OTA DVR -- like the now defunct Boxee. Back in 2011, Channel Master teamed up with Entone to fill that niche and a recent FCC filing shows the company (once again) partnering with Echostar to bring a new OTA DVR to the market. The set-top box -- called Channel Master K77 (not pictured) -- also provides over-the-top functionality and comes in two flavors: CM-7500GB16, which features 16GB of built-in flash (and relies on external USB storage for DVR support) and CM-7500GB320, which incorporates a 320GB hard drive. While it's unclear when the device will launch, it will be competing with a number of similar offerings from Simple.TV, Tivo (Series 5) and Aereo once it lands on store shelves.

Along with its most popular exports?citrus, sunburns, and tacky tattoos?Florida produces a seemingly inexhaustible supply of courtroom drama for the astonished consumption of the rest of the country. Just think how many people tuned in to watch every twist and turn in Casey Anthony?s murder trial, Elian Gonzalez?s custody case, William Kennedy Smith?s rape trial, and the 2000 election.

Florida's courts are a never-ending source of jaw-dropping scenes you'd never believe if they showed up on Law & Order?for instance, that time when serial killer Ted Bundy was defending himself and asked a witness on the stand to marry him. ?

Right now we're getting breathless TV and Twitter reports from the trial of wannabe neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman, charged with murder in the death of passing pedestrian Trayvon Martin. I mention this because prosecution witness Rachel Jeantel testified that shortly before Zimmerman killed him, Martin told her on the phone that he was being followed by some "creepy-ass cracker."

That set off a flurry of discussion and debate about the word cracker and whether it was a racial slur. Florida resident Rush Limbaugh weighed in, and there was a whole column on Mediaite about how " ?Cracker? Means Something Entirely Different in Florida: A Source of ?Pride.? "

To which my first reaction was to quote the legendary Inigo Montoya: "I don't think that word means what you think it means."

Let me break it down for you. If you are white and you grew up in Florida and you can trace your ancestry here back to the rawboned pioneers who braved the heat and skeeters and snakes and gators to establish the earliest farms and cattle ranches and settlements, then yes, you can call yourself a cracker, and it might be a point of pride to do so.?

There is a breed of cattle and a restaurant and a state fair attraction and even a type of beer that are called ?cracker,? all taking advantage of the sense of authenticity offered by that term.?

However, while there were plenty of black pioneers who helped settle Florida and black cowboys who worked those early ranches, you will search in vain for any black people from Florida who identify themselves by that term.?That's understandable, given what some crackers did to them at such places as Rosewood and Groveland.

So when Trayvon Martin, who was black, referred to George Zimmerman, a light-skinned Hispanic, as a "cracker," did he mean it in the "hey, look, it's a son of the pioneers!" way? Given that the term was modified by the adjective "creepy-ass," I would have to say no.?

Long-time head of Winthrop University retires

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) - The campus leader who's headed South Carolina's Winthrop University for nearly a quarter-century is heading into retirement.

The Herald of Rock Hill reports (http://bit.ly/14EQcf6 ) that Winthrop President Anthony DiGiorgio arrived in 1989 and is leaving on Sunday after 24 years.

DiGiorgio changed the former women's school once known mostly for training teachers into a public university that receives national recognition. He has worked to upgrade campus buildings and services, and keep operating with dramatically reduced state funding.

DiGiorgio's successor is Jayne Marie Comstock, a former vice president of academic affairs at Butler University in Indianapolis.
