Docs to former NYC Mayor Koch: Lay off the salt

Former New York Mayor Ed Koch was released Saturday from the hospital after a weeklong stay for treatment of fluid in his lungs and swollen ankles -- his third hospitalization in recent months.
Koch, 88, had expected to remain at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia hospital through the weekend, but doctors decided to let him out Saturday, The Associated Press reported, citing a spokesman.
Koch was admitted last Saturday night. He lost 16 pounds of water weight in the hospital, the AP reported, and was told to limit his salt intake. At a short press conference at his release, Koch sat in a wheelchair with an oxygen tube in his nose and said he would continue treatment at home.
A physician with him, Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, said Koch still had a way to go to restore his energy level. Koch was hospitalized in December with a respiratory infection and in September with anemia.
Koch was mayor from 1978 to 1989 and a congressman from New York from 1969 to 1979. A decade after leaving the mayor's office, he spent two years as a television show judge on "The People's Court."?He has remained active on Twitter, where he occasionally tweets as @mayoredkoch.?

Squash Programs Enter Second Half Of Season As Nation's Top ...
THRILLERS OVER HARVARD: MEN l WOMEN
For the first time this century, Princeton has both the top-ranked men's and women's squash teams in the nation, and both will continue their quests for Ivy League championships next Wednesday.
Both the Princeton men (6-0, 2-0 Ivy) and women (5-0, 2-0) are coming off dramatic 5-4 home victories over Harvard on Jan. 13. The victory kept the men atop the poll, where they have been since the preseason, while the women jumped from third to first with the win.
The Princeton women hadn't been ranked first since Nov. 20, 2009, when the Tigers were coming off three straight national championships. The men hadn't been number one at any point during the Trinity-dominated 2000's until last season, when Princeton finally knocked off the Bantams 5-4 in the 2012 national final.
While both teams are undefeated, there are long and challenging roads ahead on both paths towards potential Ivy and national championships. For the women, the first match after the finals break will play a big part in determining the winner. The Tigers will welcome fourth-ranked Penn Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 5 pm.
This has grown into one of the top rivalries in the nation, though the Quakers have had the best of it in the regular season recently. Penn has won four of the last five meetings during the season, including a 6-3 win in Philadelphia last season; Princeton, however, has won four of the last five matches played in Jadwin Gym, including a 7-2 quarterfinal win during the 2011 Howe Cup.
Penn will come into the match with a 1-1 record in league play, which includes a 6-3 home loss to Harvard. The Penn-Harvard competition included three matches that went five games, as well as three others that went four.
Princeton will head to New Haven that weekend for a pair of matches. On Friday, the Tigers will host nationally ranked Stanford in a rematch of the 2012 Howe Cup quarterfinal, won by Princeton 8-1. The next day, Princeton will take on Yale at noon in the Brady Squash Center. The Bulldogs are currently 9-1 and have Ivy League victories over both Columbia (9-0) and Cornell (6-3). The Bulldogs were pushed hard in a road win at Cornell; three of their six wins came by 3-2 scores.
Yale is led by 2011 national individual champion Millie Tomlinson, and it has won four straight over Princeton. That run followed a stretch of six straight wins for the Tigers, including five during Princeton?s three-year run as national champions (2007-09).
Following the Jan. 30 match with Penn, Princeton will play only once more at the Jadwin Squash Courts. The team will celebrate Senior Day Feb. 10 at noon as part of a doubleheader against Columbia.
The men will return to the court Jan. 30 when they take on Penn at the Jadwin Squash Courts. That will be the Tigers? final tune-up before hitting the road to New Haven, Conn., to take on the Yale Bulldogs. Both Princeton and Yale are undefeated in Ivy play right now, and those two schools have combined to win each of the last six Ivy League titles (they also shared the 2006 title in a three-way split with Harvard).
Thus, the winner of the Princeton-Yale regular season match has won the Ivy League title seven straight years, and the home team has won this match three of the last four years. Last season, Princeton ended a two-year skid with an 8-1 home victory over the Bulldogs.
Cornell showed that it would be a forced to be reckoned with last season, when it upset Yale and pushed Princeton during a tough CSA semifinal match. The Big Red is 7-1 on the season, though it fell 8-1 to Yale. The Big Red will host Princeton on Feb. 8 in what could be the biggest final obstacle for the Tigers in the Ivy race.
The rematch from the 2012 national final will take place Feb. 16 at the Jadwin Squash Courts when the Trinity Bantams come to town. Trinity is currently undefeated, including an impressive home win over Yale on Wednesday, and is currently ranked second nationally.
The national championships will take place Feb. 22-24 at Yale, while the individuals will be the following weekend at Trinity.

Distribution: A Weak Link in Gun Control?
Adding to the complexity of the gun-control debate, a new study suggests that guns make their way into the hands of criminals partly because arms manufacturers don't use secure distribution channels for their products.?
Kevin D. Bradford, an associate professional specialist in marketing at the University of Notre Dame?s Mendoza College of Business, led the study of how guns were used in violent crimes and what kinds of safeguards gun manufacturers had in place for distribution.
?The gun industry is cloaked in secrecy,? Bradford said, ?We found that 1 percent of gun dealers are responsible for 45 to 60 percent of guns involved in crimes. These dealers divert new guns [that are] intended for responsible owners to those [people] that gun restrictions are meant to keep away from the weapons.?
Bradford?s research found that guns run through a secure distribution channel are less likely to be used in violent crimes. Yet, many gun manufacturers don?t take measures to safeguard distribution. Bradford believes that requiring such measures, such as distributor background checks, might help curb some of the gun violence occurring in the United States.
?When manufacturers implement safeguards in their distribution channels, their guns are not used as often in crime,? he says. ?If those marketing principles were put in place, dealers would be more discouraged from selling guns to the wrong people.?
Bradford believes that gun manufacturers should be held to the same level of accountability as their counterparts in other industries.
"If we can hold Hasbro accountable for choking hazards for children, it seems reasonable that we should be able to hold gun manufacturers accountable for their intermediaries who distribute to criminals," Bradford says.

Patrios vs. Ravens LIVE UPDATES: AFC Championship Game 2013
Here we go again.
In a rematch of last year's AFC title game, the New England Patriots will once again host the Baltimore Ravens with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.
In what could be the last stop of Ray Lewis' last ride, the Ravens take on yet another future Hall of Fame quarterback in Tom Brady. Last week in the Divisional Round, Baltimore faced Peyton Manning, rallying in the final seconds to force overtime with a miraculous touchdown pass from Joe Flacco. It was in the second OT session when the Ravens' defense came through and intercepted an ill-advised pass from Manning to set up the game-winning field goal.
But now they take on Brady, who with New England's win over Houston last week, broke Joe Montana's record for most playoff victories. He's also just four postseason touchdown passes shy of tying Joe Montana's record of 45.
"It's a chess match, because he understands every coverage, he understands every defense," Lewis said about Brady's ability to read defenses, via NFL.com. "And if you give it away too early, then the game is like checkers for him."
While much of the focus will be on the Brady-Lewis narrative, the x-factor of the AFC Championship game might be Baltimore's quarterback. Flacco 7-4 record in the postseason isn't too shabby, and five of those wins have come on the road (tied with Eli Manning for the most in NFL history).
"I would like to think that I go out there and play consistently and approach everything the same way," Flacco said earlier this week. "I think that's been proved out. We win a lot of football games around here, and this is actually the third time I'm standing up here getting ready to play in an AFC championship game."
Will Flacco finally get over the hump and help extend Lewis' last ride to New Orleans for the Super Bowl? Or will Brady and the Patriots send the Ravens home for the second year in a row?

Brady takes the shotgun snap and finds Welker running toward the sideline for the easy touchdown. Ravens' cornerbacks were yelling at each other right after he caught it.
Ridley tries to power his way up the middle but gets stuffed for about 1 yard.
Ravens blitz forcing Brady to get rid of it fast but Pollard was at the line to bat it down. Incomplete.
After an 8-yard gain by Ridley up the middle, Brady hits Hernandez on a slant route and the Pats pick up 5 yards and a first down. Ball at the 2-yard line.
Ridley runs up the middle for 4 yards and a first down. Patriots hurry up and run a screen to Welker, who runs down the right side until he's finally brought down by Suggs for a gain of 24.
Brady hands it off to Ridley who runs up the middle for 7. Patriots are in Ravens' territory.
After a 7-yard pass to Welker, Brady hits Lloyd with a quick screen on his left that goes for 4 yards and a first down.
Following a return of 22 yards by McCourty, Ridley runs right for about 3 yards. Ellerbe is flagged for a personal foul giving 15 more yards to New England. He slapped a NE player after the play.

Rice gets hit in the backfield but stays on his feet, runs left and into the end zone for the TOUCHDOWN. Ravens take the lead. Rice broke 2 tackles on the run. Chung is down on the play.
Flacco goes for the fade pass to Pitta in the left corner and he comes down with the ball but he didn't get both feet in bounds. Incomplete.
Rice gets another handoff and starts to his right, then cuts up the field for about 5 yards. First and goal from the 2-yard line coming up.
Ray Rice runs up the middle this time, bursts through a hole and cuts to the left for about 8 yards.
Flacco drops back and fires a high pass to Torrey Smith who jumps up and comes down with the catch at the 25-yard line. Great throw and catch.
Pearce gets a carry this time, bounces to the outside and picks up about 4. Ball is at NE's 40.
Flacco drops back and finds Pearce running right out of the back field and he goes down the right sideline for about 9 yards.
They go to Rice on first down again and he picks up about 2 running left.
Flacco drops back, gets plenty of time and finds Rice on his right coming out of the backfield and he picks up 11 yards and another first down.
Rice gets the handoff in shotgun formation but he is held to just 2 yards.
Flacco drops back and hits Pitta open down the middle of the field and the Ravens pick up 17.
Flacco runs a play-action and hits Leach that would have been about a gain of 5, but the ball got stripped and knocked out of bounds back a couple yards. So just a 3-yard gain.

Second presidential terms loaded with setbacks
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Second presidential terms are never easy ? even for George Washington.
More often, they're fraught with peril, frequently marred by scandal, failure, hubris, and burnout, and souring relations with Congress.
President Barack Obama acknowledges the dangers of overreach but vows to steer cautiously. The odds are against him.
He's the 20th U.S. president to serve all or parts of two terms. Most of the others have encountered setbacks and frustrations.
He's also the third in a row to win a second four-year term. Both predecessors stumbled.
President Bill Clinton was impeached by the House over lying about an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, although the Senate declined to remove him from office. President George W. Bush failed to get a big Social Security overhaul through Congress and was slammed for his handling of Hurricane Katrina and growing voter anxiety over the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
From Inauguration Day, a second term president's influence and power begin to ebb.
"It's called fatigue, people burn out. Typically, the top people are recruited for the first term. For the second term, you kind of go to the bench," said Ross Baker, a political science professor at Rutgers University. "It's a little less illustrious than the starting lineup. You're going to get more people perhaps a little less sure-footed. That's putting it, perhaps, mildly."
There's something of a political Continental Divide with second terms. At some point everybody's attention starts flowing in the other direction as those in both parties start shifting their focus to the next election.
Also, Obama sets out against a backdrop of looming new fiscal showdowns that will come to a head in March ? another battle over the debt limit, mandatory spending cuts postponed from January and the expiration of spending authority for the entire government.
And some of his top second-term goals such as immigration and tax-code overhaul, gun control and climate-change legislation come as grim budget realities cast a long shadow over what he can accomplish.
History is littered with troubled second terms.
Richard Nixon resigned in disgrace. Ronald Reagan's second term was marred by the Iran-Contra guns-for-hostages scandal.
Even George Washington, the nation's revered first president, had an ugly second term.
His backing of the Jay Treaty expanding trade ties with Revolutionary War foe Britain divided the nation. Many leaders ? including future president Thomas Jefferson ? challenged Washington. Jefferson called the treaty a "monument of folly." Angry crowds gathered outside Washington's house and talk simmered of impeachment.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was able to win four terms but had a tumultuous second one despite a 1936 re-election landslide. His effort to expand and pack the Supreme Court with ideological allies was soundly rebuffed by Congress. And Democrats suffered mightily in the 1938 midterms.
Since Roosevelt's day, presidents have been constitutionally limited to two terms. The downside for victorious incumbents: being unable to run again limits a second-term president's clout, lessening the ability to reward allies or thwart political foes and hastening lame-duck status.
But second terms don't have to be failures ? and Obama won't necessarily succumb.
William Galston, a domestic policy adviser in the second Clinton administration, said the notion of a second-term jinx or curse is an over-simplification because "a lot of presidents have trouble in their first terms" and don't get re-elected. And second-term achievements ? such as Clinton's ? need to be weighed along with setbacks, he said.
Galston also suggested some things may be easier for Obama in his second term given the dynamics of his re-election victory ? such as immigration and tax-code overhaul. He's already gotten Congress ? post-election ? to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans, something he couldn't do earlier.
Clinton's second term? "I would judge it as an incomplete success. And its incompleteness is largely his own fault," said Galston, now a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.
In his book, "Presidential Power in Troubled Second Terms," presidential scholar Alfred Zacher concluded that only one president had a truly better second term than his first: James Madison, president from 1809-1817. But seven others had OK second terms despite setbacks, he wrote, most recently Dwight Eisenhower, Reagan and Clinton.
Reagan, despite Iran-Contra, oversaw a major 1986 simplification of the tax code and the unraveling of the Soviet Union in his second term. Clinton learned how to reach across the aisle to deal with Republicans on welfare overhaul and deficit reduction and left office with an annual budget surplus ? an achievement no other president since Andrew Jackson can claim.
James Thurber, director of the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University, said that by the end of a first term, "The American people have gotten to know the president very well. The enthusiasm of his first election is long gone. That limits the possibility of great success in the second term."
Also, presidents who were just re-elected can get overconfident from their victories, see their elections as a "mandate" to push their agendas, start believing re-election campaign hype and surround themselves with many burned-out senior staffers and inexperienced younger ones, suggests Kenneth M. Duberstein, who was Reagan's chief of staff.
"Add to this too much communal drinking from the same Kool-Aid, and it is a recipe for disaster for any second-term president," Duberstein wrote. "All of us who have served in second-term White Houses have seen this witch's brew."
President George W. Bush claimed "political capital" from his 2004 re-election win and "I intend to spend it." But it was a losing investment. He got little done in his second term.
Thomas Cronin, a political science professor at Colorado College, said Obama's time to wield influence is limited and he needs strike quickly.
A year or two into a president's second term, "people say, well, let's just wait this guy out," Cronin said." That's why the next six to ten months are so crucial."
