The Toshiba Qosmio F755-3D290 ($1,699.99 direct) sounds like the stuff of science fiction, with its integrated stereoscopic 3D technology that lets you watch video in 3D without glasses. Unfortunately, this new twist on display technology comes off as gimmicky and pulls down the overall quality of an otherwise well-equipped?if pricey?desktop replacement laptop. While gadget lovers and 3D aficionados may want to snap this up, most will wisely pass in favor of more mainstream alternatives.
Design and Features
The Qosmio F755-3D290 features Toshiba's Fusion 3D Finish, a textured metallic red plastic across the lid, with a glossy black finish covering the palm rest and interior. The glossy finish attracts plenty of fingerprints, but the patterned design disguises them fairly well. Measuring 1.5 by 15.3 by 10.5 inches (HWD), the Qosmio F755-3D290 is far from being the slimmest laptop in the desktop replacement category. Part of its girth can be attributed its thick lid and screen?needed in order to accommodate the additional hardware for the glasses-free 3D. This extra hardware contributes to the Qosmio's weight, tipping the scales at 7.5 pounds. Compared with the 5.5-pound Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft) ($999 direct, 4 stars), it's no featherweight, and it weighs just as much as the HP Envy 17 3D ($1,599.99 direct, 3.5 stars), which has a larger 17-inch screen.
The most distinguishing feature on the Qosmio F755-3D290 is its ability to display 3D content without the need of glasses. Rather, Toshiba's "Active Lens" technology creates a double parallax display that allows two separate images to be displayed at once, and directed to each eye independently. While displaying 2D content, the 15.6-inch display offers 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, with a widescreen format. When displaying 3D content, the resolution drops to 1,024 by 768, the same resolution you would see on a budget laptop, albeit in stereoscopic 3D. The display also has faint diagonal lines running across the screen, which diminishes the visual appeal of the 1080p display.
Through the Qosmio F755-3D290's built-in webcam and Toshiba's FaceTracking technology, it determines the position of your eyes and adjusts the angle of the two images to accommodate every turn and shift of your head. Admittedly, it's an exciting concept, but in practice it falls short of expectations. To hear Toshiba tell it, you'd think that watching a movie with the glasses-free 3D enabled would be a movie-lover's dream, with added depth and not even the barrier of a pair of glasses separating the viewer from immersing themselves in cinematic splendor. In practice, the effect is difficult to watch for more than a few minutes. Though the FaceTracking technology adjusts the picture for your head movement, it lags so badly that the effect is more problematic than the issue it's purportedly solving. And if you already find yourself woozy when watching 3D, the new display makes it worse as it constantly warps and shifts to match your vantage point. While the concept of glasses-free 3D is enticing, this is clearly a technology that needs a few more kinks worked out.
The keyboard's keys are square, but aren't separated in the usual chiclet-style as they are on keyboards like the Sony VAIO VPC-F215FX/BI ($1,799 direct, 4 stars). Unlike the sculpted keys of the Editors' Choice Dell XPS 15z, the Qosmio F755-3D290 has flat-surfaced keys with a slightly raised square keycaps, mimicking the feel of a chiclet-style keyboard. There's also a 10-key numeric keypad for number entry or gaming. A capacitive-touch control strip above the keyboard lets you control functions (like volume, 3D, Wi-Fi, etc.) with just a touch. Just below the keyboard is a multitouch trackpad molded into the surface of the palm rest. The trackpad surface is distinguished by a light texture and glowing strip across the top. Below the touchpad are two shiny right and left mouse buttons, polished like a chrome bumper. They click easily, but don't offer the same softness as the mouse buttons on the Dell XPS 15z.
The built-in Harman/Kardon stereo speakers are paired with Dolby Advanced Audio and Waves MaxxAudio 3 audio enhancement software. The resulting audio quality is quite good, but it can't offer the same sort of bass heard from the HP Envy 17 3D, which has a built-in subwoofer and is equipped with Beats audio.
The Toshiba Qosmio F755-3D290's feature set is pretty well fleshed out. The three USB 2.0 ports are equipped with Toshiba's Sleep N' Charge utility, which lets you charge your phone or MP3 player while the laptop is powered down, and one USB 3.0 port for connecting faster hard drives. The headphone and microphone jacks are juiced up, thanks to Toshiba's Sleep N' Music, which lets you listen to your MP3 player through the F755-3D290's speakers while the laptop is asleep.
In terms of connectivity, this laptop has Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi, as well as Bluetooth 3.0 and a media card reader (SD, MMC, MS/Pro, xD). A VGA port will let you connect to an external monitor or projector, and an HDMI-CEC port lets you display high-definition content on any HDTV. Unlike standard HDMI ports, HDMI-CEC also allows control of CEC-compatible TVs and set-top boxes through the laptop, reducing the need to juggle multiple remotes when streaming media from the laptop.
The Blu-ray drive supports 3D and has the ability to not only read, but burn Blu-ray discs as well as DVDs and CDs. It also offers LabelFlash software for burning labels directly onto compatible DVDs. The Qosmio F755-3D290 is equipped with a 750GB, 5400rpm hard drive. While this drive is a larger capacity than any of the units we compared it to, like the 640GB drive in the Sony VPC-F215FX/BI, it's also slower, as the Sony VPC-F215FX/BI and HP Envy 17 3D have faster 7,200rpm drives.
There is some bloatware, but not so much that you'll have to dedicate an afternoon to remove it all. Some users may welcome added programs like Microsoft Office Starter 2010 and Google Chrome web browser. Other programs are just taking up space, like a short 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security, Skype, several sample games from WildTangent, a dedicated desktop link to Amazon's website, and Toshiba-branded stores for Apps and eBooks. Toshiba also covers the Qosmio F755-3D290 with a one-year warranty on parts and labor, and covers the battery as well with its own one-year warranty.
Performance
As a desktop replacement laptop, the Qosmio F755-3D290 is still a well appointed system, boasting a quad-core Intel Core i7-2630QM processor and backing it up with 6GB of RAM. This combination offered some of the best performance we've seen among the 15-inch laptop category, even topping the Editors' Choice Dell XPS 15z in several benchmark tests. Thanks to its quad-core processor, the Qosmio F755-3D290 scored 4.28 points in Cinebench R11.5, topped only by the similarly equipped Sony VAIO (5.07). It beat all its competitors in multimedia tests, completing Handbrake in 1 minute 37 seconds, and running through Photoshop CS5 in 3:57. With scores like these you can be confident that the Qosmio F755 will handle any program you want to throw at it, and if you can ignore the unusual display, it will serve you well for photo and video editing.
There's a lot of graphics horsepower behind the Qosmio F755-3D290 's 3D display, provided by an Nvidia GeForce GT 540M graphics card with 1GB of dedicated video memory. With the glasses-free voodoo turned off, the laptop produced strong scores in all of our graphics and gaming tests. In 3DMark 06, the F755-3D290 scored 9,941 points at 1,024-by-768 resolution. When cranked up to 1080p, the laptop scored 5,147 points. In actual gaming tests the Qosmio F755-3D290 produced strong results, pumping out 57.1 frames per second (fps) in Crysis and 39.8 fps in Lost Planet 2 at 1,024-by-768 resolution and medium quality settings. But frame rates dropped to unplayable levels when detail settings were increased and the resolution taken up to 1,920 by 1,080. All in all, the gaming performance topped that of both the Sony VPC-F215FX/BI and Dell XPS 15z, but was narrowly edged out by the HP Envy 17 3D.
High-end components and fancy display technology require a lot of power, and battery-life suffers as a result. On MobileMark 2007 battery life tests the Qosmio F755-3D290 lasted 2 hours 57 minutes using a 6-cell 48Wh battery. Though short-lived, it lasted longer between charges than other 3D capable laptops can manage, edging out the Sony VAIO VPC-F215FX/BI, which lasted 2:36 with a larger 54Wh battery, and more than an hour longer than the 1:45 time that the HP Envy 17 3D produced with a 62Wh battery. When compared with a standard 15-inch desktop replacement, however, this 3-hour battery life is quite meager: the Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft) lasted 6:22 with a 64Wh battery, more than double what the Qosmio F755-3D290 offers.
While the promise of glasses-free 3D may be enough to reel in some early-adopters and 3D enthusiasts, that gee-whiz appeal isn't enough to satisfy careful shoppers. While its price tag may not be unusual for a 3D-equipped laptop, it has a smaller, and lower-resolution display than competitors like the similarly-priced Sony VAIO VPC-F215FX/BI. It's also a good deal more expensive than any number of 15-inch laptops like the Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft), our Editors' Choice for the desktop replacement category.

WASHINGTON ? Amid a chaotic post-revolution period, the United States on Wednesday pressed Egypt's interim military leadership to strengthen Egypt's partnership with Israel and stick to scheduled elections later this year, even though a new set of leaders much less friendly to the U.S. and the Jewish state may be the winners.
After a meeting with the Egyptian foreign minister, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton went out of her way to describe the country's ruling military council as "an institution of stability and continuity," commending it for adhering to Egypt's 32-year-old peace agreement with Israel. She called the Camp David Accords "essential for stability and, of course, essential for Egypt's growth, prosperity and peaceful transition."
But alongside the praise she expressed some growing concerns with the military's domestic policies, specifically a decision to extend well into next year the emergency laws that were a mainstay of abuse during Hosni Mubarak's three-decade rule.
"We hope to see the law lifted sooner than that," Clinton told reporters, after her meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Amr. "We think that is an important step on the way to the rule of law, to the kind of system of checks and balances that are important in protecting the rights of the Egyptian people, to create the context for free and democratic elections."
The American demands on Egypt represent in some ways the twin set of hopes and fears with the movements for greater democracy in the Arab world. The Obama administration has championed those movements but hopes to corral their energy so that political transitions from Tunisia to Yemen don't slide back into military domination or create a powerful new wave of intolerant populism ? as occurred after Iran's Islamic revolution a little more than three decades ago.
The U.S. also hopes populism unleashed in Cairo and elsewhere does not spell the end of Arab alliances with Israel, which while always shallow and filled with suspicion were still a foundation of U.S. policy in the Middle East. With the fall of U.S.-backed autocrats such as Egypt's Mubarak, however, the U.S. may have less to offer Arab governments in return for their toleration of Israel.
Clinton promised Egypt the Obama administration's full support for a new beginning. She said the administration was aiming to get congressional support for $1 billion in debt relief for Egypt, so people "can invest that money into new projects that create jobs and give them a better standard of living." She rejected the call from some in Congress for new conditions on the $1.5 billion in annual U.S. aid to Egypt. And she spoke of helping to create a network of community colleges in Egypt to provide training for new employment opportunities.
With Egypt, the United States is trying to lay the foundation for renewed relations with a future government that will be more democratic if less amenable to U.S. interests. Washington hopes to persuade Egypt's leaders to salvage ties with Israel and maintain counterterrorism and diplomatic efforts that may be deemed vital for American national security but not necessarily supported by the Egyptian people.
The fraying of relations with Israel has especially concerned the United States, which has been lobbying much of the world in recent weeks against a Palestinian bid for recognition as a state and U.N. membership. Egypt, which under Mubarak often played a key mediation role between the two sides, has come out determinedly for the Palestinian bid over fierce Israeli opposition.
In his opening remarks, Amr told reporters that Mideast peace talks needed to start as soon as possible "with clear terms of reference and with a clearly defined timeline," pointing the finger specifically at Israel for its approval Tuesday of 1,100 Jewish housing units in disputed east Jerusalem.
"Israeli illegal settlement activities continue to be an impediment in the road for peace, and we would like to see them stopped," he said.
Clinton praised Egypt's leaders for helping defuse tensions with Israel after protesters recently stormed the Israeli Embassy in Cairo, and acknowledged the key role it expected the country to play in forging a two-state peace agreement after six decades of conflict.
"Egypt's leadership in the Arab world and in the region, and beyond, is key to regional progress," Clinton said. She cited the Israeli-Egyptian model of security cooperation as an example for an accord with the Palestinians.
Clinton reiterated her "very strong support for Egypt's ongoing democratic transition."
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta hit many of the same subjects in his meeting Wednesday with Amr. Pentagon press secretary George Little said Panetta expressed his appreciation for the Egyptian military's role in helping the people transition toward a new political future, including free elections.
The two men also talked about the prospects for greater stability in the Middle East, as well as Egypt's commitment to its treaty obligations with Israel, Little said.
With Egyptian elections around the corner, Washington's relations with Egypt will likely become more difficult. At stake is American influence in a crucial geopolitical space linking North Africa to the Arabian Peninsula, and how the U.S. projects power in a part of the world where al-Qaida and other Islamist extremists still pose a threat to the United States and where the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to hamper American relations with Arab countries
Among American officials, the early hopes of a triumph for democracy and rule of law after Mubarak's February ouster, alongside a continuum of U.S.-Egyptian cooperation, have slipped somewhat amid increasingly worrying signs: the apparent chaos in the Israeli embassy storming, the arrest of demonstrators and bloggers, the extension of the Mubarak-era emergency law empowering authorities to detain people without charge and stamp out strikes and demonstrations.
The vote for Egypt's legislative People's Assembly starts Nov. 28 and the less powerful Shura Council on Jan. 29, with both parliamentary houses to begin their session in March. And well-organized Islamist parties could make significant gains, with the hardline Muslim Brotherhood likely to parlay any new power into a far tougher line on cooperation with the United States and Israel.
While any new government would likely honor the 1979 accords with Israel, the result may be one closer to cold peace than regional partnership. Neither the remnants of the old regime nor youth-driven secular groups are keen to assume the banner of Mubarak's unpopular legacy or ignore the voices on the streets which mobilized so forcefully against Mubarak.
Clinton conceded that starting a democracy from fresh is no easy task, and one fraught with pitfalls. "We're well aware, having been working at our own democracy for over 230 years, that this takes time," she said. "This takes persistence and patience, and it's often hard to have the latter in a time when there's so much pent-up demand and hope for a better future."
The U.S. can't push too hard right now against the fragile military council guiding the transition. For all its failings, the administration sees it as the best hope for a stable transition. A collapse in the reform process or a retrenchment away from free and fair elections, and toward a military junta, would provide a devastating example for a Middle East that is still largely in revolt.
With Syrian demonstrators desperately pressing for the end of Bashar Assad's regime, Yemen on the brink of an all-out civil war and Libya's opposition authorities seeking to destroy Moammar Gadhafi's remaining resistance, the U.S. is keen to hold up a successful democratic transition that provides an example to the region and safeguards American interests. Having both won't be easy.
NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey vetoed on Monday a $420,000 film tax credit dubbed the "Snooki Subsidy" for the reality show "The Jersey Shore," citing the state's budget crunch.
Christie, a longtime critic of the raucous MTV show that offers a less than flattering portrayal of life in the Garden State, said in a statement the money would be better spent on "projects that actually benefit the state."
In a letter to the Economic Development Authority, which awarded the hit show $420,000 in film tax credits, Christie said it was not just a matter of money. It was personal, too.
"As chief executive, I am duty-bound to ensure that taxpayers are not footing a $420,000 bill for a project which does nothing more than perpetuate misconceptions about the state and its citizens," Christie said in the letter.
Since the show first aired in 2009, the outrageous antics of the tanning-bed loving, party-going cast have made "Snooki" and "The Situation" household names in America.
At the same time, some Italian-Americans insulted by negative stereotypes perpetuated by the cast have called for an end to the show.
The response from MTV, which has aired the seaside smackdowns and barroom brawls of both male and female cast members of "Jersey Shore," was sober and brief.
"The governor's decision will not impact the show," MTV spokesman Nathaniel Brown said.

We?re not even halfway through the regular season, but I guess it?s not TOO early to be looking at bowl projections.
CIF will select schools from Northern California to participate in its annual bowl games in December and there are a couple Mid-Valley schools in the running.
Go figure, it?s the two of the area?s biggest rivals.
Sutter (4-0) is currently ranked No. 10 in the Division III bowl division and Wheatland (4-0) is listed in the ?Others to Watch? category.
The only Northern Section school to ever earn a state bowl bid was Hamilton in 2008. Only one way to describe that game ? ouch.
Wheatland can help its own cause when the Pirates host Colfax on Friday night for homecoming.
Colfax (4-0) is ranked fifth in Division III and fresh off a 48-40 victory over Division-I Davis. The Falcons are the Sac Bee?s No. 18 team in the latest poll.

This lead compound - which acts by increasing the levels of a human antiviral protein - could potentially be developed into a new drug to combat the flu, a virus that tends to mutate into strains resistant to anti-influenza drugs.
"The virus is 'smart' enough to bypass inhibitors or vaccines sometimes. Therefore, there is a need for alternative strategies. Current drugs act on the virus, but here we are uplifting a host/human antiviral response at the cellular level," said Dr. Beatriz Fontoura, associate professor of cell biology and senior author of the study available online in Nature Chemical Biology.
According to National Institutes of Health, influenza hospitalizes more than 200,000 people in the U.S. each year, with about 36,000 fatalities related to the illness. Worldwide, flu kills about 500,000 people annually.
In the latest cell testing, the compound successfully knocked out three types of influenza as well as a smallpox-related virus and an animal virus. Because of the highly contagious nature of the 1918 flu, those tests took place at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, one of the few places that stores and runs tests on that flu strain.
The compound is among others that the research team is testing that induce an infection-fighting human protein called REDD1. Until this study, researchers had not demonstrated that REDD1 had this important antiviral function.
"We've discovered that REDD1 is a key human barrier for infection," said Dr. Fontoura, "Interestingly, REDD1 inhibits a signaling pathway that regulates cell proliferation and cancer."
The UT Southwestern-led research team tested 200,000 compounds for those that would inhibit flu virus infection. A total of 71 were identified.
Using the two most promising compounds, researchers at UT Southwestern and colleagues at Mount Sinai next will work to strengthen their potencies for further testing. Dr. Fontoura said it can take more than 10 years before successful compounds are developed into drugs.

"Everybody is reasonably okay with the proposals," BlackRock Director Stefan Kaiser told Reuters on the sidelines of the hearing. "People realize that something will happen, if anything because clients are demanding it."
ETFs are mutual funds traded like a stock and are popular because of their cheap fees. Although regulatory concerns have been brewing for months, they have most recently been caught up in alleged rogue trades that triggered $2.3 billion losses at Swiss bank UBS (UBSN.VX) (UBS.N).
UBS has alleged a trader on its ETF desk in London had racked up the losses through unauthorized, speculative futures transactions which were hedged with fictitious ETF trades.
However, ESMA's representatives at the hearing -- held at ESMA's headquarters -- told Reuters that perceived weaknesses in risk management and oversight at banks trading in ETFs was not within their remit. "That's for the banking regulator," said one representative.
The hearing took place in the wake of a consultation by ESMA, launched in July, on what it sees as inadequate regulation of listed complex ETFs sold under the EU-approved UCITS mutual funds framework.
Regulators worry about what they see as potential systemic risks from the complex structured and synthetic or leveraged varieties which use derivatives like futures and options rather than a stock or commodity, as their underlying security.
Complex ETFs now make up half the market in Europe and regulators worry they leave investors with open ended exposures.
ESMA's representatives expressed concerns about the recent growth spurt of ETFs and whether there was enough disclosure and transparency to allow retail investors to really understand the product.
"If the investor is not able to understand they need an advisor to buy the product," said ESMA's Nicoletta Giusto. "They have to be able to understand what they buy."
ESMA is looking at possible curbs on sales of complex ETFs to small investors. Its chairman, Steven Maijoor, said in July the emphasis would be on giving investors more information about risks, though curbs could not be ruled out.
However, several executives at the hearing cried foul over what they saw as excessive demands for transparency and disclosure on the composition of ETFs. One PriceWaterhouseCoopers representative told the hearing: "If you get down to a daily, single-position transparency, then this will be the death of this product."
The European Fund and Asset Management Association (EFAMA) told ESMA's consultation there is generally no need for ETF-specific regulation as the EU framework provides for a "very high level of investor protection."
UK consumer lobby group Which? disagreed.
"With regard to concerns about exchange traded funds, UK consumers could be purchasing a financial product manufactured in Luxembourg or Ireland, managed from Paris and listed in London, with potential exposure to swap counterparties located elsewhere," Which? said in its submission to ESMA.
"This means that it is vital that action is taken at a European level to control the risks from these products," the consumer association added.
The Financial Stability Board of global regulators is studying complex ETFs and the European Systemic Risk Board urged caution on their distribution.
Britain's Financial Services Authority has questioned whether synthetic ETFs are suitable for small investors.
