Whether it's put off by Microsoft's own push into tablets with Surface or just taking a wait-and-see approach, HP has now confirmed that it won't be among those offering ARM-based Windows 8 (or RT) hardware when the OS makes its long-awaited debut later this year. That possibility was first reported by SemiAccurate earlier today and has now been backed up by Bloomberg, which has the official word straight from HP spokesperson Marlene Somsak. She noted that HP will instead be focusing solely on x86-based devices, a decision that she says was "influenced by input from our customers," adding that the "robust and established ecosystem of x86 applications provides the best customer experience at this time and in the immediate future." What's more, Somsak went on to say that HP's first Windows 8 tablet will focus on the business market, which certainly lines up with the leaked device pictured above that surfaced a few months back.
HP plans to hold off on building ARM-based Windows tablets, focus on x86 instead originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 13:26:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Some people enjoy swimming with dolphins or?snorkeling?on their vacations. Others go skiing or strap into amusement park rides. Some, though, may consider these activities too tame, ordinary. These are the types of people who might instead be interesting in, say, driving a tank over old sedans, for example.
(Photo: Drive a Tank)
?Drive a Tank,? a company in Kasota, Minn., lets these types of thrill seekers try their hand at the military version of monster-truck driving.
With only a quick briefing on tank controls and operations ? no previous tank driving experience necessary ? newbie tank drivers can take the treads for a spin. According to the company?s website, the tanks are unarmed ? so no target practice. (Note: If you are interested in target practice, they have a historic machine gun that, depending on the package you sign up for.)
(Photo: Drive a Tank)
Watch this AP report with footage and tank-driver commentary of the experience:
?To have that much weight on just two brake handles, it?s awesome,? said Jacob Ostling, 19, after the tank rolled over a car and rained glass around his head. The car ?was like a tin can,? he said.
You may also notice that the tanks are from Europe. The company states that unlike America, which didn?t release its ?armor? to the public, some European countries have done so and ?Drive a Tank? is putting them to good use.
?Wars and skirmishes took place in Europe, and out of need for farm equipment and transport vehicles [...] Due to availability, the fact that England has been an ally through the years, and price of their vehicles; our armor is British,? the company website states.
(Photo: Drive a Tank)
Owner Tony Borglum, a construction and heavy equipment contractor, opened the tank park three years ago after seeing similar attractions during a visit to England. He said he knew it would fit nicely into American culture ? a more visceral version of what millions of guys are doing in video games anyway.
He began buying up old Cold War-era surplus and now has 11 armored vehicles available for use on a 20-acre site near this town 50 miles southwest of Minneapolis. Customers spend hours churning up and down a hilly, wooded course, getting a firsthand sense of what armored warfare might be like.
?It?s not as glorious as it looks like on TV,? said Borglum, a short-haired 25-year-old who wore camouflage pants, a tan polo shirt and boots at the session.
But it satisfies the curiosity of those who have watched tanks in war movies.
?It was very realistic,? agreed Brad Walker, of Amboy, Ind., who brought his 21-year-old son, Nick, for an outing before the young man got married. ?It kind of gives you an idea exactly how hard that job is.? Nick Walker, who squeezed his 5-foot-11, 230-pound frame into the cramped compartment, added, ?It?s not a big person?s job.?
(Photo: Drive a Tank)
There are various packages at differing price points, but to give you an idea, crunching cars could cost you up to $750 whereas a more simple drive through a wooded area will cost about $400. If you?re really a high roller, $3,500 will let you drive a tank through a trailer home. Even if you?re not interested in driving though, of if you?re bringing your friends along, you can also just take a ride in the tank for $45.
Borglum said his tank park wasn?t the first in the United States but he knows of no others still operating. Event coordinator Kessa Baedke said more than 600 packages have been sold this year.

The cover to Scientific American December 1916 is rocking with alluring imagery.
There?s a reason the front cover of Scientific American isn?t a wall of text.
There?s a reason it isn?t a text-heavy infographic. Images are alluring. They catch attention. They intrigue people enough to ask, ?what?s that all about??
There have been a number of discussions again lately about science communication, specifically outreach. ?Scicurious wrote a nice round-up on Neurotic Physiology, Jason Goldman at The Thoughtful Animal effectively reached some people about the recent transit of Venus across the sun and here on Symbiartic, my co-blogger wrote Communicating Science: What?s Your Problem? and A Conference of Science Communicators. If you are interested in getting the public more interested in science, attracting attention to the science blogosphere, or to picking up easy to find print publications, you need to have interesting and smart imagery.
There are two types of image which can help science posts online.
Images for clarity
At it?s simplest, this can manifest itself as ?Ok, I wrote a post about blood pressure in giraffes; I?ll include some Creative Commons or public domain photos of giraffes.? ?Not necessarily inspiring, but it gets the job done. You?ve got a visual, a bit of a hook. You might go further, and find or commission a scientific illustration showing ?the size and position of the giraffe heart and circulatory system. Scientific and medical illustration have an advantage over photos this way, since the artist edits out the extraneous viscera and bloody mess, showing the clear system cut away in a galloping or grazing giraffe.
Images for inspiration and impact
This is where science outreach needs to get artsy.
An effective artistic piece about the subject can do a whole lot more to draw people in. On a site about the safety of vaccines, instead of cold, clinical needles, why not happy, smiling children? (Making a human connection is a bonus.)
If you don?t know where to look for a science communicator with an artistic portfolio, you can start with the Science Artists Feed, a blog rss feed with over 150 wildly varying working talents. Or the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators.
Two of the scientific fields that maintain public interest in the news are astronomy and prehistoric life, usually dinosaurs. I don?t think the amount of science fiction ? in books, movies, cartoons and illustrations- that?s been built up around those disciplines?is unrelated to their popularity. ?We don?t know much about the colour and only some things about the?behaviors?of dinosaurs: but the licence by paleo-artists let?s us imagine them based on current animal analogues. We don?t know what it?s like to view sunset on an extrasolar planet; but we can see it in the illustrations generated to get us excited about it.
So it?s a challenge for illustrators and communicators alike: how do you inject emotion and artistic licence into important research with little artistic vocabulary?
The same way it?s possible to collect and enjoy a history of dinosaur art, imagine in a hundred years? time what the art history of wind power, or the Higgs-Boson or immunoproteomics will look like.

By the time police asked Internet users to remove graphic photos of a man decapitated after he jumped in front of a train, it was too late for the dead man's son. He had already seen the grisly images ? recorded by teenagers?just after the incident occurred ? when they went viral on Twitter.
You can hear the teens in the background of the shaky cellphone video, recorded Wednesday afternoon in the Netherlands, calling to each other, their adolescent voices tweaked with shock, excitement. "Here. Here is the body. Here he is," one boy shouts in Dutch. Another points to the man's severed head, a few feet away. No one is laughing.?
At least 70 students?at a nearby school ??in the?Kennemerland area of?Haarlem ??witnessed the accident or immediate aftermath, reports?Ijmuider Courant, a Netherlands news site. School officials swung into action. Within 10 minutes of the incident,?administrators?guided students away from the station and back to the school. There, counselors and members of the?Kennemerland police department spent the afternoon talking to kids and later, their parents, about what they had seen.
Yet at the same time that the school was trying to mitigate the psychological damage of the incident, a video of it was being shared among students and?making its way out onto the Internet, by way of Twitter.
This is the video the?dead man's son had already seen when?Kennemerland?police broke the news to the family. It was then that son connected the two, and realized the video was of his father.?
When the police department found out about the video, the department took to Twitter and asked the public to stop sharing the video. In Dutch, the police?asked, "Anyone who has shared pictures of the?Driehuis?train victim, remove them immediately. It is disrespectful and goes too far!"
It's a good-faith plea, made by a police department savvy in the ways of the Internet, enough to know it was already too late. It was too late 15 minutes after the video first hit Twitter, when the teenage boy who first sent it out into cyberspace deleted his original tweet. It had already been?retweeted countless times. And that is the lesson that Evy Elschot, spokesperson for the Kennemerland police department, hopes people will take away from this incident, instead of the gory details.
"The boy didn't understand the impact of what he had done," Elschot told msnbc.com in a telephone interview. Identifying him only as a teenager between the ages of 14 and 16, Elschot described him choking on tears and shaking with panic when confronted by police. "The boy said he wished he didn't do it, that he could take it back, but of course he couldn't," she said.
The boy tweeted (in Dutch), "I hate myself for what I've done," according to news site RTL.?
Elschot told msnbc.com she regrets the story receiving national attention, resulting in?the inevitable spread of a video that causes pain to a family already suffering. (Msnbc.com will not link to the video.) To protect the family's privacy, she would not share the age of the son who saw his father in the video.?
According to?Elschot, it was a very difficult decision to ask people via Twitter to delete the video.
The Kennemerland police department is very active on Twitter, using the official account to communicate with the public on such things as traffic delays, especially crowded areas at festivals, as well as finding witnesses to crimes and fielding complaints (and compliments) from the public. But by using Twitter to discuss a suicide, the Kennemerland police department went against what Elschot describes as Holland's "gentleman's agreement" to not publicize details about suicides.
Elschot said that it's in consideration for families whose?members?commit suicide,?but this practice also abides by the World Health Organization's recommendations for avoiding suicide contagion ? a phenomenon which affects those already at risk. Train suicides account for 4 to 10 percent of suicides in the Netherlands, the Journal of Affective Disorders reported in 2010.??Such a video going viral could spread contagion as well.
Elschot agrees that there's an important discussion to be had, but not about this family's tragedy.
"This really is about young people and how the world is different," she said. "When I was a kid, I might say some things in my small town without thinking, but we only had the telephone. Someone else might read your letter, and there is embarrassment for awhile, but not the oil spread of information we now have on the Internet. Kids need to understand that and their parents need to tell them."
The American Library Association website offers a variety of resources to help parents and kids navigate the Internet safely and responsibly. ?
If you are thinking about harming yourself or attempting suicide, tell someone who can help right away:
Ask a family member or friend to help you make these calls or take you to the hospital.

WEST JORDAN, Utah -- A 6-year-old girl found dead in a canal near her home was sexually assaulted, police said Wednesday as detectives hunted a suspect.
Authorities in the Salt Lake City suburb of West Jordan said the girl was reported missing by her mother early Tuesday morning. On Wednesday, police ruled Sierra Newbold's death a homicide and said an autopsy determined she had been sexually assaulted.
"At this time no suspects have been identified and we do not have any persons of interest," Police Chief Doug Diamond said.
"There is obviously a predator out there that is a monster, that has murdered a child," Diamond told NBC station KSL. "Is this predator targeting other children? I have no idea at this point.?Our highest priority now is to identify, arrest, and successfully prosecute the person or persons responsible for this crime."
'No need to panic'
The chief said he has increased police patrols in the area and is asking parents to take precautions to protect their children.
"If during the course of this investigation an imminent threat becomes known, we will share that information with our residents immediately," he said. "I believe there's no need to panic at this time."
Diamond said the girl's parents have been cooperating in the investigation.
Speaking to KSL, Diamond?declined to provide details about the victim's condition, but added: "There was not a significant amount of trauma on the body."
Reed Newbold, the girl's grandfather, said her mother found her missing from her bedroom early Tuesday.
"We don't have any idea" how the girl disappeared or whether she was taken from the bedroom, Reed Newbold told The Associated Press. "It's a complete mystery."
The parents "are devastated by this," he said. No working telephone number could be found for the parents, and authorities had cordoned off the neighborhood with police tape and patrol cars, where pink and purple ribbons hung on trees and mailboxes.
More news from KSL.com
Officers found Sierra's body in the canal about a block from her home, just 30 minutes after her mother "discovered she was not there and called us," police Sgt. Drew Sanders said.
Sanders declined to comment on any possible motive in the case. Investigators also are withholding a precise chain of events leading to the girl's disappearance.
"We haven't come to any conclusion," Sanders said. He said police have "tons of leads" and "it's paramount we find out who did this."
Police have said there were no signs of a break-in at the family's home, and they declined to release any more details about the case.
KSL's report added:
The case appears to have similarities to an unsolved Salt Lake City homicide that occurred in August 1995. Two days after going missing, the body of 6-year-old Rosie Tapia was found in a canal near her family?s Glendale-area apartment. Police ruled her death to be a murder, but leads eventually ran cold. Rosie would have turned 23 this August.

Chimpanzees sit in an enclosure at the Chimp Eden rehabilitation center, near Nelspruit, South Africa in this Feb 2011 photo.
By NBC's Rohit Kachroo and msnbc.com staff
An American studying chimpanzee behavior in South Africa was ?fighting for his life? after he was attacked by two of the animals, according to a report.
The chimpanzees dragged the man for more than a mile, under a fence and into their enclosure at Jane Goodall Institute Chimp Eden near Nelspruit, The Telegraph newspaper reported.
The paper said the victim of the attack had not been named. However, it said it understood he was a ?young university student from the United States who had been observing the animals at the reserve for several weeks.?
Jeffrey Wicks, a spokesman for private ambulance firm Netcare911, told the Telegraph that witnesses said the man was leading a group of tourists when the attack happened.
"A ranger at a chimpanzee sanctuary near Nelspruit is fighting for his life after he was attacked by two frenzied animals while leading a tour group at the park this afternoon," he added. "According to eyewitnesses, two chimpanzees grabbed the man by his feet and pulled him under the perimeter fence and into the enclosure."
Armed escorts for paramedics
Paramedics needed armed escorts as they went in to treat the victim, NBC?s Rohit Kachroo reported. It was unclear whether this caused any delay.
The victim was stabilized at the scene and taken by ambulance to a private hospital in Nelspruit, NBC said. There have been no similar attacks at the reserve, which opened more than six years ago.
David Oosthuizen, Jane Goodall Institute executive director, confirmed the reserve was on lock down following the incident, The Telegraph said.
NBC's Meredith Vieira sits down with Charla Nash, who recently underwent a face transplant that's helped her regain the life she had before being brutally attacked by a chimp.
"We understand that the gentleman is stable and we really feel for him," he told the paper. "This has been very upsetting for everyone ? it is just horrific. We are an organization that's respected worldwide for the work we do so anything like this is very bad."
Victim of chimpanzee attack shares progress, optimism
He added that some of the animals kept there had been abused before they were rescued and taken to the institute.
"These chimpanzees have six times the strength of a human being so you have to respect them and we certainly do," he said.

Doesn't it kinda seem like Michelle Williams has always been famous? After all, despite the fact that she's only 31, Williams -- whose latest film is the relationship drama?"Take This Waltz" -- has been appearing in movies and on television for nearly 20 years, earning three Oscar nominations for films like "My Week with Marilyn" and "Brokeback Mountain." She is, as they say, big time.
But hard as it is to remember, there was a point before she was famous ? and we've got the goofy sitcom clip to prove it.
Here's the deal: Back in 1995, "Home Improvement," which starred Tim Allen as a fix-it guru with his own TV show about repairing houses, was one of the most popular sitcoms in America, in part because of its family friendly storylines involving teen heartthrobs Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Zachery Ty Bryan.

And since every teenage boy in a sitcom needs a cute love interest, enter Williams as Jessica, a modern girl with stylish bangs, a hip sweater vest and an open mind about dudes who wear makeup. Hey, the '90s! Needless to say, Williams has blocked most of it out.
"The only thing that I remember was being backstage before," Williams recently told us."Because when you do a sitcom, you come out and you do a curtain call, and the only thing that I remember was seeing the behind-the-scenes, like how the house was built, you know, that it?s not a real house. It?s plywood back there, and people scrawl things on the plywood, and it?s all kind of a construction zone. I remember the behind-the-scenes more than I remember what happened in front of the scenes."
Don't worry, Michelle, we're happy to refresh your memory! Here it is, courtesy of YouTube:

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> Getting To "Yes" - Negotiating With Panache Getting To "Yes" - Negotiating With PanacheI have recently helped several clients negotiate better contracts for themselves. Not just better financially, but more aligned with professional goals they have and the types of work they actually enjoy doing. Negotiation is a steep learning curve for many, but vital to understand.
Getting to "Yes" - Negotiating with Panache
The higher you climb up the professional ladder, the more your daily work life revolves around negotiations for both you and your team mates. Most people initially think of salary packages when considering negotiation skills. However, these skills can range from eliciting help from colleagues to getting support for your new ideas from more senior colleagues and board members.
Identify your main goal for the negotiation and where you would be prepared to compromise. Always go in asking for a bit more than you would like, more money for a project, more salary or holiday entitlement, more funding for staff training. If you have an idea of what your main goals are, the areas on which you compromise will seem like "gifts" or concessions to the other side, making you appear more reasonable and willing to negotiate.
Do not remain so attached to the idea of "winning" the argument. Putting your point of view forward without seeming to be attached to the results helps others lower their guard, relax and be able to see your perspective. Going in with a cross to bear only elicits resistance and tension in others. If you stick to the benefits and logic of an argument, often others will embrace it and sometimes even think of it as their idea - a major benefit if you want implementation more than recognition.
Top Tips for Effective Negotiation
1. Assume everyone has influence. When trying to land a sale or impress at an interview, never assume you know who is completely in charge. Heads of organisations often take advice from a wide range of people, so don't concentrate your efforts only on one person. A kind word for a secretary or personal assistant often helps just getting you the interview slot you want and in fact, many executives will solicit information about your demeanour from their staff. So don't wait to turn on the charm until you see the whites of the CEO's eyes - greet everyone with respect.
2. When entering a negotiation, listen to the other side first. You will frequently hear priorities that overlap with your point of view. Verbally recognise these points and build them into a foundation for the concept you are proposing. Listening also conveys that you want this to be a collaborative process, a good start for any negotiator.
3. Verbally reflect what they are saying to convey that you understand what they want. Use phrases like "What I hear you saying is-" or "If I understand you correctly -". This allows them to correct any miscommunication while demonstrating they are truly being heard; an invaluable asset for any negotiation.
4. After listening, start by emphasising the points with which you agree. Shared priorities and experiences allow differences of opinion to be only one part of the story of how you both want to move forward.
5. If you can, phrase all of your questions in an open manner avoiding answers that are likely to begin with "No". Limiting the usage of this word keeps the atmosphere feeling collaborative, not combative.
6. At the end, summarise the agreements, actions points and compromises each side will be taking from the meeting and minute the details as this can eliminate problems or back-tracking later on.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Hundreds of African-American veterans who helped to integrate the Marine Corps during World War II at a time segregation was an everyday reality are now proud recipients of the nation's highest civilian honor.
Nearly 70 years after the Marines of Montford Point became the first African Americans in the Corps, Congress on Wednesday awarded them the Congressional Gold Medal. The Corps was the last branch of the U.S. military to allow blacks to serve.
Originally from Washington, D.C., then-19-year-old Charles Manuel Jr. enrolled with the Marines in 1942 straight out of high school.
Manuel was sent to Montford Point, a North Carolina base that the Corps created to keep African Americans away from bases where other Marines trained. Roughly 20,000 other African- American Marines trained at the base, which operated from 1942 to 1949.
He said that the training at the base was rough, because for many recruits it was their first time experiencing boot training and their instructors were White. "Our drill instructor told us, 'You people want to be Marines, I'm going to make Marines out of you dead or alive.'"
Manuel, now in his late 80's, sat next to his daughter, Rosetta Holloway at the ceremony.
"It was more than overdue," Holloway said. "I'm very excited and pleased for my father, who's really proud of being in the Marines."
William McDowell, who was selected to represent Montford Point, received the medal on behalf of the roughly 400 Montford Point Marines in attendance. "It does sadden me that some of our brothers are not with us today. The upside of it all is that we do remember each and every one of them. They are in our hearts and minds and they should never be forgotten," McDowell said before taking a pause to dry his eyes.
The medal will be on display at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Virginia. The Marines received bronze replicas.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt banned racially based employment discrimination by all federal agencies in 1941, and a presidential directive allowed African Americans to serve the Marines in 1942.
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi was among the members of Congress who spoke at the ceremony. Speaker of the House John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell also spoke at the ceremony.

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? Mathematicians at the University of Sheffield, as part of an international team, have discovered tornadoes in space which could hold the key to power the atmosphere of the Sun to millions of kelvin.
They are more than 1,000 miles wide -- hundreds of miles longer than the total distance between Land's End to John O'Groats. It is estimated that there are as many as 11,000 of these swirling events above the Sun's surface at any time.
Applied mathematicians from the University of Sheffield (Professor Robertus Erd?lyi -senior author, and Dr Viktor Fedun) collaborating with the University of Oslo in Norway (Drs Sven Wedemeyer-B?hm -- first author, Eamon Scullion -- a Sheffield ex-postgraduate, Luc Rouppe van de Voort), Kiepenheuer Institute for Solar Physics of Freiburg, Germany (Dr Oskar Steiner), and Uppsala University in Sweden (Jaime de la Cruz Rodriguez), say the solar tornadoes carry the energy from the energy reservoir below the Sun's surface, called the convection zone, to the outer atmosphere in the form of magnetic waves.
Professor Robertus Erd?lyi (a.k.a von F?y-Siebenb?rgen) Head of the Solar Physics and Space Plasma Research Centre (SP2RC) of the University of Sheffield's School of Mathematics and Statistics, said: "If we understand how nature heats up magnetized plasmas, like in the tornadoes observed in the Sun, one day we may be able to use this process to develop the necessary technology and build devices on Earth that produce free, clean, green energy. Because of our collaborative research it looks an essential leap forward is made towards unveiling the secrets about a great and exciting problem in plasma-astrophysics and we are getting closer and closer to find a solution.
"We report here the discovery of ubiquitous magnetic solar tornadoes and their signature in the hottest areas of the Sun's atmosphere where the temperature is a few millions of degree kelvin, about thousands of kilometers from the Sun's surface. This is a major step in the field."
Professor Robertus Erd?lyi added: "One of the major problems in modern astrophysics is why the atmosphere of a star, like our own Sun, is considerably hotter than its surface? Imagine, that you climb a mountain, e.g. a Monroe in the Scottish highlands, and it becomes hotter as you go higher and higher. Many scientists are researching how to "heat" the atmosphere above the surface of the Sun, or any other star.
"It is understood that the energy originates from below the Sun's surface, but how this massive amount of energy travels up to the solar atmosphere surrounding it is a mystery. We believe we have found evidence in the form of rotating magnetic structures -- solar tornadoes -- that channel the necessary energy in the form of magnetic waves to heat the magnetized solar plasma. It is hoped that the process could be replicated here on Earth one day to energize plasma in tokamak that are believed to be a future device to produce completely clean energy."
Scientists viewed the solar tornadoes in the outer atmosphere of the Sun, stretching thousands of miles from the giant star's surface by using both satellite and ground-based telescopes. They then created 3D-layered sequence of images of the tornadoes and simulated their evolution with state-of-the-art numerical codes using the magnetic imprints detected by their high-resolution, cutting-edge telescopes.

Sixty percent of Latino voters polled in five battleground states said a Supreme Court ruling in favor of the Arizona immigration law would contribute to a hostile environment for immigrants and Latinos.

EnlargeIf the US Supreme Court upholds Arizona?s tough anti-illegal-immigration law this week, a majority of Latino voters in five battleground states believe the ruling will contribute to an ?anti-immigrant, anti-Hispanic environment? in the United States, according to a new poll.

And that, in turn, could benefit Democrats, who are perceived as better than Republicans at reaching out to Latinos, according to the Latino Decisions polling group.
The Obama administration sued Arizona over its 2010 immigration law, known as SB 1070, which requires police to check the immigration status of people they stop for other reasons. Critics say the law could result in racial profiling, even though the law bans the practice. The high court could issue its ruling Monday.
Latino Decisions polled Latino voters in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, and Virginia ? all of which have significant Latino populations and, with the exception of Republican-leaning Arizona, are seen as swing states in the November presidential race. In the poll, 60 percent said a ruling in favor of the Arizona law would contribute to a hostile environment for immigrants and Latinos, while 28 percent said upholding the law would have no effect.
?Even though the Arizona law claims to only target undocumented immigrants, the survey results show that a clear majority of US citizen Latinos who are registered to vote are also concerned about the implications of the law being upheld,? according to the report by Latino Decisions/America's Voice. ?
In all the states except Florida, a majority of Latino voters said they personally know someone who is undocumented, including 11 percent who said someone in their family is undocumented. Florida?s Latino population is dominated by people of Cuban descent, who do not face the immigration status issues of those from Mexico and other Latin American countries.
In Arizona, 65 percent of Latino voters said a Supreme Court decision upholding its anti-illegal-immigration law would create a more hostile environment toward Latinos and immigrants in their state. In neighboring Nevada, the percent holding that view was just as high. In Virginia and Florida, it was 58 percent, and in Colorado, 56 percent.
In Nevada, 74 percent of Latino voters said they know an undocumented immigrant, and 41 percent said they know someone who has faced immigration proceedings ? the highest percentages of the five states. ?
The poll was taken between June 12 and 21 and interviewed 400 voters in each state. In results from the poll released last Thursday, the survey found that President Obama leads Mitt Romney 63 percent to 27 percent in the five states. But just as important for Mr. Obama, 60 percent of the respondents now describe themselves as ?very enthusiastic? about voting in November, an increase from earlier this year. That growth in enthusiasm followed Obama?s decision to stop deporting some young undocumented immigrants.
