AP Interview: Transsexual lawmaker speaks out (AP)

WARSAW, Poland ? Poland's first transsexual lawmaker says she wants to campaign for the rights of gender minorities and make predominantly Catholic Poland more receptive to transsexuals and homosexuals.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Monday, Anna Grodzka said it's time that sexual minority groups in Poland enjoy the right to partner unions, job security and state funding for gender switch medical procedures.

The 57-year-old Grodzka has received massive media attention in Poland and many gestures of support from ordinary people since being voted into parliament on Oct. 9 as member of the new left-wing Palikot's Movement.

The 460-member parliament convenes on Nov. 8.
